The wee McCormick International needs some tlc after it found dragging a water bowser up the hill for the rain machine a bit much. Does anyone have any mechanic recs for wee, old but brilliant machine like this? All suggestions gratefully received. Thank you thank you 🌞

“I crane my neck slightly to look at the dull bulb dangling above. It’s swaying as the wind picks up.

The shadows on the canvas wall dance in front of me. Taunting, playing with the light. The strong larch ribs of the Mongolian yurt sauna slowly start to creak and I hear the wind against the structure move and shapeshift. But it feels safe, almost like I’m at sea on a ship, held in the grip of the waves lapping at my mind, tempting me with peace.

But I’m not on a voyage, and at sea I am not.
I’m here in the Pentland Hills and inside the Eastside Sauna, a unique addition to the Nordic steading accommodation that Michael and Jenny run on their family farm.”

It’s not often a book makes you rethink an experience you think you know well; or excite you to what it could be. But that’s exactly what Hannah Mary’s has done.
Travelling the breadth of Scotlands saunas and people but with tales of the Scandinavian ways Hannah Mary Goodlad and Ritchie Williams have beautifully captured this wee country and its growing sauna culture. She weaves our history of fire, our native botanicals, our saunas, their communities, characters and landscapes so vividly. It is a celebration of the sauna experience but so much more. We are once again so proud to have our wee hill sauna built with Red Kite Yurts and Yurt Saunas featured.
The book now joins the curated collection in each cottage. Hannah Mary recommended the Pentland nettle sauna whisk to be used sparingly. While brave, we may try her pine löyly first, a beautiful recipe for a pine scented water for the stove made using pine needles, like the water and firewood, from the hills of Eastside.

A funny story. A downpour. And a Barbour ad.
Barbour came calling looking for a location; mum and I were mucking out in our scruffy, waterproofs, wellies and muddy farm jackets. When they said they were looking for real people we offered up dad - (with modelling experience of one day under his belt) - but commented about brands tending to ignore women of a certain age.
Calling our bluff, Barbour signed us up. Rather uncomfortable and inexperienced participants mum & I agreed. Principles were at stake.
In the event everything was shoved to the end of a busy day of celebrities, tight schedules and mixed weather. The rain started pouring relentlessly. Umbrellas were called for (for the camera), hair and make up had gone home and when asked if there was anything I could do about my hair I replied it was probably beyond fixing.
But you know what, it’s real life. Apart for the back drop it was raw and real. The wind blew sheets of rain through the glen. Rain dripped off my nose, soaked my hair and wind blew damp strands over my face.
I have huge respect for a brand that hires Sienna / but also the opposite. A farmer with her dog on the farm in real Scottish weather. Autumn is in the air and the swallows are saying their yearly goodbyes. There’s something very Barbour about that.

Ever grateful for kind words & eclectic tales from the hill garden: 🤍🌿
‘The most amazing and restorative stay. I would move in and live there forever if they let me! I went for a bit of an artist/writing retreat and it was an absolutely perfect location in every way. I hiked the hills, breathed the fresh air, and enjoyed the perfectly appointed Wash House cottage. Scandi-style simplicity without lacking for anything. The bed was possibly the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in while traveling, the linens were heavenly and the nights were absolutely blissfully quiet. Everything was blooming and gorgeous in the flower garden outside my window, lambs were frolicking in every pasture and a mama and lamb wandered through the flower garden & past my window, taking nibbles every day, only to be herded out by a sheep dog who seemed to be smiling whenever called upon to do his job. Finally, the owners, Michael and Jenny, were absolute gems. Friendly and responsive, and full of tips and information when asked. Don’t hesitate to book here! You won’t regret it.’

As we prepare for our next winter project with Iain MacLeod we look back on the last. The drawings and detailing come to life. The way the space is divided, sometimes very boldly with solid black furniture and other times subtly with hit and miss screening giving glimpses of the hidden space beyond.
The spaces are tiny but at the same time expansive, bold but subtle, a contradiction but definitely Tetris. Everything fitting so perfectly and exactly. It’s a wee/ big work of art.

Cosy season is here. As the temperature drops; sharp showers roll in on a brisk wind. Wild (occasionally wet) hikes are rounded off with wood fired saunas, log burning fires and the smell of woodsmoke. This is our favourite time of year. Come stay.
