🐾 Meet Riley, the 5 year-old Golden Retriever (AKA Steak Stealer) 🐾

This golden boy looks like butter wouldn't melt, but he's actually an accomplished steak bandit. He once stole a steak from his humum when she turned her back for a moment and didn't even look sorry about it. He's also been known to consume rubber gloves and glasses and will unashamedly eyeball anyone who catches him in the act.

Aware that at any moment he may need to channel his energies into nicking your lunch or your sun glasses, Riley isn't keen on wasting energy going for walks and will sit down and refuse to follow if anyone suggests walkies.

Despite being a lazy career criminal, Riley likes dressing up. He wore a bandana and a bow tie when he came to visit us on Father's Day and at home he likes to wear a blanket like a stylish cape.

If you ever come face to face with Riley and he has designs on your bacon, either distract him with favourite toy (a golden retriever teddy that he thinks is the same size as him 🤣) or enlist the assistance of a few pigeons, as he really doesn't like birds.

We can definitely overlook Riley's rap sheet because, although we know his history, we fall for those big brown eyes every time 🤎🤎.

🐾 Meet Leija the 2 year-old Finnish Spitz 🐾

The Spitz is the national dog of Finland, so Leija's owners named her after the Finnish word for kite. Although Scandinavian by heritage, Leija lives in Drogheda, in the north of the Republic of Ireland. She is a well-travelled girl and a regular guest at The Red Lion. She has competed in Crufts the last two years, where there are only 7 other Finnish Spitz in her class, and 4 of them are related to her!

When she's not attending prestigious dog shows with her extended family, Leija likes to hang out on the beach and dip her paws in the Irish Sea. She loves people and other dogs and the only thing she's not keen on are fireworks, which annoy rather than scare her 🤣.

We love having Leija to stay at The Red Lion and it seems that she feels the same way about us, as the staff get lots of kisses from her during her visits 🥰.

🐾 Meet Cocoa the 3 year-old Black Labrador 🐾

Cocoa belongs to Harriet, who is part of the front of house crew at The Red Lion. Harriet is busy revising for her exams at the moment (she has her maths paper 2 tomorrow), but she took a break from her revision to bring Cocoa out for some essential Wednesday afternoon posing in the beer garden 😁.

Cocoa is mess of contradictions. Sometimes she's a bit of a lad, chewing on a rugby ball and skimming the froth off a pint of Guinness, other times she's a health fanatic, enjoying her favourite snack (carrots) and avoiding puppuccinos (even though she loves them) because they play havoc with her allergies. If you pick up a camera to take her picture, she instantly closes her eyes and lifts up her paw, as the influencer in her reckons that's her best angle 🤣.

At the end of a long day, Cocoa likes to curl up with her favourite toys, which include a Kevin the Carrot from Aldi UK, her octopus and her hedgehog. We love having Cocoa in the extended Red Lion family and we hope Harriet and her family will bring her in for lots more pub time when all the horrible exams are finished.

🌿 Meet our gardeners, Charlotte and Jayne 🌿

Charlotte used to work front of house at The Red Lion but decided she would like to be outdoors more, so went freelance and set up Charlotte's Gardening Services (her logo was designed by Eleanor, who is part of our floor team and is also a talented artist).
Assisted by her mum, Jayne, Charlotte is responsible for looking after The Red Lion's extensive beer garden.
This mother and daughter team are inspired by the positive effects that being outdoors has on mental health and want to create beautiful spaces to help people enjoy their time in the open air.
The garden would be a wilderness without their efforts, which we particularly appreciate at this time of year, when all the plants are growing like crazy and need frequent attention to keep them under control.
Raise your glass to Charlotte and Jayne the next time you are sitting in the beer garden with a pint - it's their hard work that makes it such a lovely space for adults, children and all our doggy visitors to enjoy 🥂.
