Located in the heart of the small village of Kilchrenan, the Inn will serve good, honest, British food for lunch and dinner, alongside a carefully selected range of beers, wines and spirits. Once an 18th century trading post, the Inn has been transformed into a contemporary gastropub and is a true gem hidden amongst the munros and lochs of rural Argyll & Bute. The Kilchrenan Inn is a 15-minute drive from Taynuilt and a short walk from the shores of Loch Awe, one of Scotland's largest lochs. It is the ideal pit-stop for those exploring the West of Scotland and only a short drive from Oban, the Gateway to the Isles.

Some stories are best told after dark. 🌙

Around Loch Awe, the past is full of strange encounters, mysterious figures and tales passed down through generations.

In 1677, Donald McIlmichall found himself on trial after describing an encounter with otherworldly figures dancing by candlelight near Dalavich. His story is a reminder that the folklore of Argyll is every bit as fascinating as it is unsettling.

As the nights draw in, traditional Scottish storytelling returns to Kilchrenan Hall this Friday. A fitting way to welcome the darker half of the year.

KILCHRENAN, WRITTEN INTO HISTORY...

More than 130 years ago, this little corner of Argyll found its way into a Gaelic poem.
In October 1892, the great Scottish folklorist Alexander Carmichael recorded a Gaelic poem beginning “Nam bidh Lochoa...” in one of his field notebooks.
Alongside the verse, Carmichael carefully noted some of the places being described.
Loch Awe. Fernoch. And Kilchrenan.
He even noted the water at Kilchrenan making its way down towards Loch Awe - part of the same landscape that surrounds our little village today.
Carmichael spent much of his life collecting and preserving Gaelic songs, stories, folklore and traditions from across the Highlands and Islands.
And tucked amongst those notebooks is this tiny glimpse of Kilchrenan in 1892.
More than a century later, the water still runs towards the loch, the hills haven’t moved very far - and we’re rather pleased people are still finding reasons to write about this little corner of Argyll.
