What is Solar Stargazing?
Looking directly at the sun with the naked eye—or an unfiltered telescope—is extremely dangerous. Solar telescopes, however, are equipped with specialized H-alpha (Hydrogen-alpha) optical filters that block 99.999% of sunlight and harmful radiation.

When you look through a dedicated solar telescope, you get to see:

Sunspots: Darker, cooler regions on the solar surface caused by magnetic field concentrations.
Solar Prominences: Massive loops of glowing gas erupting thousands of kilometers into space from the sun's edge.
Granulation: The churning, boiling texture of the sun's photosphere.

It is a hypnotic, real-time look at a living star—an experience that leaves both children and adults spellbound.
To bring astronomy closer to the community, Luca and the Akaroa Stargazing team have brought their specialized solar setup to Akaroa!
