Anglers Lodge motel and holiday park enjoys some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastal scenery, recreational fishing and boating opportunities. A range of accommodation options are available, from self contained motel units, cabins and powered / unpowered camp sites. A small shop with the most used groceries fishing gear, ice, bait. We serve Altura organic coffee from our coffee machine. Facilities include a swimming pool, spa, games room, children’s play area, boatwash & fish cleaning area. Nearby can be found a clear flowing stream and lagoon (safe swimming and paddling for children under supervision), with beach access and beautiful bush walks just moments away. Come snapper fishing in the beautiful Coromandel on our 7.5m walk-around boat. It takes less than 10 minutes to travel to the majority of our fishing spots! Enjoy our standard 4 hour or full day trip. All tackle & bait provided. Boat launching:
Boaties have use of a nearby boat ramp and Anglers Lodge offers its guests a special tractor boat launching and retrieval service . Boat wash-down and fish cleaning facilities are available on site. Boat taxi:
Spend a day fishing, or simply relaxing and enjoying the incredible scenery, on any of the many offshore islands by using our ‘Rock Hopper’ boat service. Our boat will drop you off and pick you up again after your day out. Sight Seeing Tours:
Take a trip on ‘Anglers Lodge’ around the many islands that comprise the Motukawao Group. Experience aquaculture with a visit to the mussel farms. Sight some of the many sea birds in the area with a visit to the gannet colonies or perhaps a penguin or three. Dolphins are also regular inhabitants of the area as are whales and orca, however these tend to be seasonal. Anglers Lodge is just 1 hr 20 minutes drive from Thames, and 20 minutes from Coromandel Town. Your journey will include some of New Zealands most spectacular coastal scenery. Can you recognise this road? We know you love the historical photos of the Coromandel Coast, so here's another one. This photo of the coast road near Tararu Historical Cemetery is from 1906 and colourised in recent years.

The iconic coast road from Thames to Coromandel Town is one of the most beautiful stretches of road on the peninsula, winding between the ranges and the Firth of Thames.

But go back far enough and there wasn’t a continuous road at all.

The route itself is much older than the road. For hundreds of years before European settlement, Māori travelled this coastline by waka and along established tracks connecting communities around the Hauraki and Coromandel coast.

Early European travellers relied heavily on boats, tracks and even the beach at low tide to make their way along this coastline.

By 1890, a road between Thames and Coromandel was almost complete, but those early journeys would have looked very different to ours.

By the 1920s, motor cars were becoming a common sight on the Coast Road, sharing its narrow bends with buses, lorries, motorcycles, horses and carts. The road was continually being widened and improved, while councils battled slips and erosion from the sea.

More than a century later, that same route has become part of the experience of travelling north.

If you’re coming to Anglers Lodge through Thames, take your time on the Coast Road.

You’re not just driving to Coromandel.

You’re following a route people have been finding their way along for generations.
