There's a particular pleasure in eating food that was, very recently, growing in the ground twenty metres from where you're sitting.

At Awaroa, our kitchen garden is the beginning of the menu: herbs, greens, edible flowers, seasonal vegetables.

Dinner at the lodge becomes something else entirely when you understand that. Every plate is a conversation between the chef and the place. Between skill and season.

Some meals are just food. Others are memories you carry home.

What's a meal you've had that stayed with you?

If Awaroa had a mascot, it would be the kererū - and it would be wholly unbothered by that honour.

New Zealand's native wood pigeon is, without question, one of the most gloriously indifferent birds on earth. Large. Iridescent. Unhurried. Moving through the canopy with the relaxed confidence of someone who has never once been told what to do.
We love them for it.

The kererū plays an essential role in the Abel Tasman ecosystem - one of the few birds large enough to swallow and disperse the seeds of native trees like tawa and karaka. Without them, whole forests would look different. They are not just beautiful. They are architects.

You'll spot them throughout the lodge grounds, often in the branches above the garden beds, occasionally crash-landing into things with magnificent inelegance, because kererū have never prioritised grace over enthusiasm.

Winter or summer - they're here year-round.
One of the many reasons Awaroa stays alive long after the season ends.

Some holidays are about 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 more.
Awaroa is about 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 more.

More present.
More rested.
More connected.
More human again.

Spring 2026 bookings are now open for couples seeking something beyond the usual luxury escape.

No valet parking. No city noise. No pretending you’ll “just quickly check emails.”

Only nature, comfort, and the rare luxury of being unreachable.

Book now, link in bio.

Roadless. Off-grid. Completely immersed in the national park.

Awaroa Lodge was never designed to compete with city hotels.

It was designed for something rarer: To help people reconnect with nature without sacrificing comfort.

That balance still shapes everything we do today.
