Recently one of our amazing Scotlands hostel Nanas Dale, was awarded
The Caltex Good Sport award at the recent 2026 NZSS Premier Girls’ tournament.

Reading through the nominations, there were numerous comments relating to Dales commitment towards the New Plymouth Girls High School Fist XI as she went above and beyond as their manager, cook, tournament mum and number one supporter. Dale wasn't just focused on the wins, but instead she cared deeply about each and every person in the team. She also made sure she went to all of the girls games and updated the parents who couldn't be in Taupō. Her genuine love for the game and her willingness to help anyone who needs it, is what makes Dale amazing.

We also think Dale is wonderful and appreciate all that she does for our hostel and our girls.

Did you know...

Credit for originating fathers day is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which at the time was becoming established as a holiday. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father. In 1924 U.S. Pres. Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the observance, and in 1966 Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation that recognized the day. It became a national holiday in 1972, when Pres. Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Remember today is a day for people to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures: stepfathers, fathers-in-law, guardians, foster parents, and family friends.
However, please take some time every day to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful tāne role models in your life 🥰

TOURNAMENT WEEK UPDATE>>>>

The following update from the NPGHS First XI Footballers in Taupo. 16 girls played some fantastic possession based football today in gusty conditions at Crown Park Taupo including Scotlands hostels very own māreikura wāhinetoa senior Harriet, and juniors Bailee and Kate.

This morning they had an early kickoff, 8:30am against Otumoetai College, Tauranga. Abigail scoring and setting up Bailee for the second in a very convincing 2:0 victory.
This afternoon, they returned to Crown Park for their second game of the day against Cambridge's St Peters School, where they had an even more convincing 4:1 victory. Abigail (2), Bailee (P) and Isle all getting on the score sheet. A good victory, which involved an equaliser early on from a penalty for St Peters.

We will endeavor to keep you all up to date through out the week with their progress.

******NEWSFLASH******

We currently have members of the NPGHS Swagalicious waka ama team competing in Singapore at the World Waka Ama Champs.
The J19 Taranaki Outrigger Canoe Club Waka Ama team includes their amazing coach and NPGHS alumni Jaetaami Fraser, Scotlands hostel senior Eden, 2 Scotlands hostel alumni, Maika and Harper As well as NPGHS Elise, Ella & Esther.

From the 17th to the 31st August 2026, the world's best outrigger canoe (Va'a) sprint paddlers race for world titles beneath the Singapore skyline — 30 nations and delegations, five continents, solo and six-person crews over 500m and 1000m, from juniors to masters. Staged under the International Va'a Federation, the World Waka Ama Champs come to Southeast Asia for the first time.

The girls came 3rd today and they're off to semi finals tomorrow, Saturday morning 8:56 am our time!!
Congratulations and good luck to all their Waka Ama whānau competing in the extreme heat, legends!!

🏆 NETBALL CHAMPIONS! 🏆

What a season finish for our NPGHS Prem Netball team, including Scotlands hostel māreikura wāhinetoa Senior Molly and Junior Emily. Last week, they secured the Taranaki Secondary Schools A Grade title, defeating Sacred Heart Girls’ College in a thrilling 36–33 victory!
A huge congratulations to the team on an outstanding season and a well-deserved championship. Your hard work, determination and teamwork have certainly paid off!

Congratulations to all our Scholars, Iti Rearea and Honours recipients who were presented with their awards at a recent NPGHS special school assembly.
Honours - Ella, Vivi, Emma, Molly, Elise, Rihanna, Rylei-Jay, Haelyn, Esther, Yelena and our very own Scotlands hostel seniors, Chasca and Eden and Scotlands hostel alumni Harper and Maika.

Good evening Scotlands hostel family

For those who don't know NPGHS have a teachers only day on Friday 21st August, that means it's a LONNNNNNG weekend for the girls (our wonderful staff will still be here and hostel will still be open for those who choose to stay in)

For those living in the North please be aware there is a road Closure: SH 3 Awakino to Mahoenui (Awakino Gorge)

Due to culvert installation works, this road will be closed in both directions at all times from Saturday 22nd August at 6am to Tuesday 25th August at 6pm.
Please plan your journey accordingly, avoiding travel during this time if possible. Please note these works are dependent on various factors and may be postponed at short notice.

Maintenance
Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the closure for this weekend has been postponed. Works are now expected to occur from 6am on Saturday 29th August to 6pm on Tuesday 1st September.
