Your hosts Jennie, Grant & family, look forward to meeting you. We farm beef cattle and sheep on 850 acres near Oamaru.

We farm beef cattle and a small flock of sheep, and from late August to early October we rear calves (and orphaned lambs). Our property is home to heritage breed free ranging chickens & ducks, working dogs, Tansy and Prim our house cats, pet sheep and alpaca and pigs. Enjoy the many attractions that Oamaru has to offer.

Clancy the pet lamb gets to hang out with her mum each day. Clancy is a twin and her sister was adopted by a ewe whose lamb died. Clancy’s mum has zero milk. So each day I feed Clancy. Sometimes Clancy’s mum calls out to me when I’m running late “Oi come and feed my kid!”. Clancy being with her mum is kind of cool as she gets to do sheep things each day, has someone to hang out with so she isn’t bored or lonely and I’m busy anyway so no need for me to be emotionally attached. Win win.

Don’t tell my husband but I’m loving the calfeteria. It’s only taken me 14 years to buy one.

Fresian calves outside on the calfeteria. Unlike the Jersey calves who followed the feeder from word go, the Fresians decided to go hide in different corners of the paddock. Little goobers.

I finally caved and purchased a calfeteria. I can now feed up to 45 calves in a mob and should eventually save time.
So far I’ve used it twice. Do I like it??
No!! Mainly because I haven’t figured out how to get it level so the milk gets distributed evenly. My OCD can’t cope 😂 It’s a work in progress.

Ok so today we had a family arrive at our farm wanting to do a farm tour. The mother said she wasn’t able to book so they decided to just show up.
People, please don’t do this!! Email me, phone, text or WhatsApp me. I’m pretty good at responding to enquiries.
For the record we don’t offer farm tours during the months of August, September and October. I’m in calf rearing mode and barely human.
This information is on our website (not the part about me being barely human) and a quick email is easy peasy.

So yesterday calf rearing began. We’ve kicked off with my favourites, Jersey bulls. Actually I’m being sarcastic, last year the little buggers almost broke me. I find them the hardest to rear. And yes I realise they look cute but nah…
