Deliberately over the top is one way to describe the decor. Designer Neil McLachlan calls it "exuberant high Victorian, with a contemporary twist".

The owner wanted it to be a work of art you can sleep in.

There's hundreds of tiny design details waiting to be discovered. These are just a few.

Catching a sunrise flight? Breakfast goes with you.

Tell us the night before and there's a takeaway breakfast by the door when you leave. Early starts are part of travelling, we'd rather you didn't do them hungry.

No points, no tiers, no card for your wallet. We remember how you take your coffee, which walk you did last time, that you came for an anniversary. A hosting philosophy built around knowing people doesn't need a rewards scheme bolted on top.

If you've stayed here, you already know the difference.

If you haven't, we can't wait to meet you.

In Victorian times, a pineapple was a symbol of wealth – and Hulbert House is full of them.

The house was built in 1887 by the region's gold receiver as a visible demonstration of his wealth. In fact, wealth proved to be an irresistible draw for Horatio Nelson Firth – and he ended up in jail for embezzlement. When the building was refurbished to take on a new life as a boutique hotel, designer Neil McLachlan drew on this iconic Victorian symbol as a subtle reminder of the aspirations that pulled many ambitious fortune seekers to the region.

Hulbert House doesn't apologise for its history, and it doesn't apologise for being a bit over the top.

The man who built this house ran the region's gold. Then he stole it.

Horatio Nelson Firth built the villa in 1887 as the district's gold receiver, and was jailed for embezzlement in 1901. The Firth suite is named after him.

This house has had many lives. When you stay, you become part of the story.

"Interior design is about layers. I always start with the floor."

That's Neil McLachlan, who designed the interiors for Hulbert House. The floor he started with carries a custom-designed Chinese willow pattern and it runs right through the building.

"The design is a reference to the Chinese gold miners," Neil says. "Because they were the ones bringing in the money."

Most guests walk straight over it, but it's holding part of the story. We like to think of Hulbert House as a work of art you can sleep in, with a story going back to 1887.

Everything in the glass comes from within 50km.

The wine, the beer, the cocktails. We pour what's worth pouring, and it all comes from here. We serve drinks and canapés every evening by the fire in the Palm Lounge.

All you have to do is show up.

In theory, the pattern against stripe shouldn't work. But interior designer Neil McLachlan refuses to apologise for being "a bit over the top".

He describes Hulbert House's look as "exuberant high Victorian, with a contemporary twist."

Call it a swing back from minimalism if you like – we call it stunning.
