Celebrating our very own tourism champion! 🍃
We’re incredibly proud to share that our People & Safety Manager, Craig Buckland, has been named a finalist for the Auckland Airport Tourism Industry Champion Award for the 2026 New Zealand Tourism Awards. 🎉
Craig has dedicated almost three decades to New Zealand tourism, with a career built around looking after people, places and the environment.
Before joining Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve, Craig held a senior leadership role with Franz Josef Glacier Guides, where he managed more than 50 staff and oversaw the safety and experience of up to 75,000 visitors each year.
Working in the challenging and ever-changing glacier environment, Craig helped develop innovative health and safety systems to manage evolving risks and keep both staff and visitors safe. Many of the systems and standards he helped establish continue to influence operations on the West Coast today.
Throughout his career, Craig has also worked closely with tourism operators, iwi, government agencies and destination partners. His experience and knowledge remain highly valued across the industry, and he continues to generously share that knowledge with operators who turn to him for trusted advice and guidance.
Those who know Craig will know he isn’t one to seek the spotlight. He leads quietly, calmly and with genuine care, always looking for ways to make things safer, better and more sustainable for the people around him.
His love of the outdoors runs through everything he does, and he continues to show that caring for people and caring for the environment go hand in hand.
To us, Craig is a quiet and very deserving tourism hero, and we couldn’t be prouder to see his contribution recognised on the national stage.
Congratulations, Craig! 👏
Winners will be announced at the New Zealand Tourism Awards Dinner on Wednesday 4 November at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, following Tourism Summit Aotearoa.
