Let's start our crustacean series with a very cool critter: the mantis shrimp.

Their eyes are truly unique in the animal kingdom.

Humans have three types of colour receptors, allowing us to see red, green and blue. Some mantis shrimps, however, have 12 different types of photoreceptors, allowing them to detect wavelengths ranging from deep ultraviolet to far red. They can also detect polarised light — something humans cannot see with the naked eye.

Their visual system is one of the most complex known in the animal kingdom.

This is a critter that most of us will probably never get to see with our bare eyes.

This tiny animal is about 1 mm!!!!! 😳

Yes, you read that right! The Minutissimus Sea Slug (Cysticus minutissimus) is smaller than a grain of rice!

Not only are these tiny critters nearly impossible to find, but their ridiculously small size also makes them incredibly difficult to focus on properly.

This is just another reminder of how much there is to discover underwater—if you know where, and more importantly, how closely to look!

If you are in Sydney this weekend, be sure to attend the Go Diving Show!
There is a great line-up of exhibitors and speakers, including underwater photographer Vanessa Mignon. Vanessa will share how, after 15 years devoted to photographing cetaceans, a stay with Atlantis Dive Resorts & Liveaboards in the Philippines made her completely fall in love with macro photography.
She will talk about how macro photography transformed the way she sees the underwater world, but also how it allowed her to evolve as a photographer. Along the way, she’ll share some tips and insights.

Her talk is at 10:45 am on saturday, so come along, get inspired, and discover the fascinating world of the small creatures you can discover with Atlantis!

The stars of our dive sites are usually the flamboyant cuttlefish, frogfish, wonderpus, blue-ringed octopus, ghost ornate pipefish and our friendly turtles, so these are naturally the critters you often see featured on our social pages. So, what a delight to see this lovely video from OceanShutter, who shone a little spotlight on an adorable little blenny!
