Let's start our crustacean series with a very cool critter: the mantis shrimp.
Their eyes are truly unique in the animal kingdom.
Humans have three types of colour receptors, allowing us to see red, green and blue. Some mantis shrimps, however, have 12 different types of photoreceptors, allowing them to detect wavelengths ranging from deep ultraviolet to far red. They can also detect polarised light — something humans cannot see with the naked eye.
Their visual system is one of the most complex known in the animal kingdom.
