He started by sweeping the floors for $10 a week. By 1960 he owned the counter. 🥪
Charles Dowell began working at the Snappy Lunch in Mount Airy in 1943. The lunch counter has been open since 1923 at 125 North Main Street, and by 1960 Dowell owned it. The house specialty is the pork chop sandwich, which Our State magazine has credited as the draw, and the "Tenderator," the machine used to tenderize the cutlets, is part of the lore.
The counter also has a place in television lore. A local legend ties the name to a Mount Airy story, and the Andy Griffith Show mentioned the lunch counter in an episode that aired November 14, 1960. 🍽️
Dowell died in 2012 at 84. A town counter that old is not just a restaurant. It is a place where the same story gets passed across the same stools.
What counter or diner in your town has its own legend?
