Working on African American lines in post-Civil War Ohio?
Paul E. Nitchman’s Blacks in Ohio, 1880 series extracts every African American household from the 1880 federal census, arranged county by county. Each volume includes names, ages, birthplaces, occupations, relationships, literacy, and other details that are often time-consuming to pull directly from the schedules.
Ten volumes cover the entire state (including separate volumes for Cleveland and Cincinnati). A practical finding aid for anyone tracing Black families in Ohio during Reconstruction and the decades that followed.

Early Ohioans' Residences from the Land Grant Records, by Mayburt Stephenson Riegel, is an index to land entry records for Ohio prior to 1820. Land Offices included in the project are Canton-Wooster, Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Marietta, Steubenville, Zanesville, the Donation Tract, and the Refugee Tract. The pioneer name, date of the land entry, and the place of residence are provided. Some of the land offices in addition include the exact range, township, and section as well as the microfilm number. This index was prepared by the author from the original calf-skin hand-sewn volumes. It is a key resource utilized by those who wish to join First Families of Ohio. Available on Lulu:

Just a heads up that the Saturday the Samuel D. Isaly Library is open in August has changed. It will be closed on Saturday, August 15, but open on Saturday, August 22 to help host the DAR American Revolution Experience Traveling Exhibit.
