If you're looking to get out of Austin without a huge drive, Dripping Springs is about as easy a weekend escape as it gets. Sitting in Hays County roughly 23 miles southwest of the city, about a 40 minute drive via US-290, this small Hill Country town was officially declared Texas's Wedding Capital by the state legislature in 2015, now hosting around 1,000 weddings a year across more than 35 venues. 🌄

Beyond the weddings, Dripping Springs earned another distinction in 2014 as the first Texas Dark Sky Community, and it holds an annual Dark Sky festival celebrating that status. The historic downtown centers on Mercer Street, a one block stretch of century old buildings now filled with small businesses, and the surrounding countryside has become dense with craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries worth a slow Saturday afternoon.

About thirty miles west of downtown Austin, hidden inside a Hill Country canyon, there's a forty foot waterfall that almost nobody stumbles onto by accident. Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center protects a lush limestone grotto and emerald pool that's only reachable through a guided canyon tour, which keeps the fragile ecosystem intact and honestly makes the whole trip feel more like an expedition than a day out.

The roughly one mile roundtrip hike is rated moderate to difficult, with stairs, roots, and rocks along the way, but it opens up into a canyon that feels nothing like the rest of Central Texas. Tours run on weekends and need to be booked in advance through the nonprofit's own site, with no swimming allowed once you're inside the canyon itself. It's less about cooling off and more about seeing something most people never get to see.

What makes Westcave special is how deliberately protected it's been since restoration work began back in 1974, turning a degraded, trash filled area into one of the region's most striking natural spaces.
