Gratny Livestock Timeless ranch living where you can slow down, reconnect & unwind in a peaceful pastoral escape. Your stay can be as engaging or as relaxing as you choose.

Immerse yourself in the rhythms of a working ranch with horses, cattle, sheep & other breeds. We are blessed by a distinct culmination of our heritage, a blend of generations of cowboys and entrepreneurs. Dusten brings decades of wisdom and experience as an animal behaviorist; Kim brings exuberance and passion for hospitality, animals and the outdoors. We are humbled by and grateful for what God has entrusted to us — a blended family with five children, family-like friends, horses, bucking cattle, sheep, dogs, chickens and land to steward. We love sharing our life with others. It would be a blessing to meet you!

In a world of fast shipping, mass production, and automated everything, interest in artisan-made goods is exploding.

Every artist has a story; every work of art is authentic. People are rediscovering that their hard-earned resources can foster meaning and connection.

That’s why Dusten and Kim are collaborating with their youngest child (age 14) to purposefully curate the “Past & Present Gift Shop” on the grounds of Gratny Livestock.

Creativity runs in the family; what better way to celebrate craftsmanship and community?

Take a look at how it’s unfolding. Keep your eyes peeled for a launch date! Help us spread the word about what’s coming soon to Earlham, IA.

Faith is the heart of ranch life for us.

From the animals we care for to the land we’ve been blessed to steward, we’re reminded daily that what we do is about more than ranching. It’s about honoring God through our work, caring for His creation, and being good stewards of what He has entrusted to us.

These simple reminders around the farm reflect that faith serves as the foundation our family and ranch are built on. Through every season, we trust His plan, give thanks for His blessings, and keep faith at the center of it all.

At Gratny Livestock, we tend to treasure what others trash.

Dusten Gratny mastered recycling, upcycling, and giving old things new life long before it was a thing.

Among his favorites: creating western-style fencing using creosote posts collected from other ranches. What’s long forgotten in ditches and burn piles becomes a livestock management tool. Rodeo cattle and exotic sheep are athletic! And once an animal jumps a fence, it will jump again. A solid fence prevents animals from seeing through it or over it.

Our Afghan Urial ram once leapt a seven-foot-tall gate—from a standstill! The stock dogs rounded him up and brought him home. A few weeks later he went missing; it was the longest 24 hours we’ve ever clocked. Apparently his adventure wasn’t as interesting as the exotic ewes he was supposed to be breeding. Thankfully, he returned, unharmed!

We’re grateful for used creosote posts. They’re low maintenance. The price is right. The height is right. And, the artistry adds character to the picturesque place God lent us to steward.

Meet Kim Gratny. 🤎

Iowa has been home for Kim since she was six years old. Today, she helps make Gratny Livestock the welcoming place it is, serving Dusten and their five children while caring for the land and animals they’ve been entrusted with.

Kim traded the corporate uniform for cowboy boots after discovering the similarities between working with horses and working with people. That realization eventually led her to launch fullCIRCLE creative + coaching in 2016, where she continues to help foster meaningful connections.

More than anything, Kim loves people. She has a gift for making others feel welcome and enjoys building genuine, lasting relationships with the people God brings into her family’s life.
Whether she's preparing breakfast, sharing stories on the porch, caring for the animals, or welcoming guests through the gates, Kim is a big part of what makes Gratny Livestock feel like home.

Come meet Kim and experience the hospitality of Gratny Livestock.

Meet Dusten Gratny.

A Kansas native, Dusten is the founder of Gratny Livestock and has spent four decades working with animals and learning the nuances of animal behavior.

His family’s background in trick riding and roping took them to rodeos and circuses across the country. Today, Dusten’s experience shows up in everything he does, from horse training and working stock dogs to raising livestock and sharing the ranch with guests.

But more than anything, Dusten has a gift for understanding both people and animals. He believes relationships matter, and that patience, communication, and trust are at the heart of good horsemanship and ranch life.

Whether you find him working with an animal, sharing a story on the porch, or welcoming guests through the gates, Dusten is at the heart of what makes Gratny Livestock what it is.

As you’ve probably discovered, questioning conventional practices is a frequent occurrence at the Gratny’s.

And given that a lot of hay is purchased to feed the variety of animals that call this place home, we considered raising our own hay—only for a split second. The thought of purchasing haying equipment (tractor, mower, rake, and baler) was replaced by the decision to experiment with a more effective pasture management approach: native grasses.

We’re grateful to Rich and Annette Gratny of Paris, TX, for renting us the land (that’s typically in a corn and soybean rotation); Eocene Environmental Group of West Des Moines, IA, for guiding us; and Hoksey Native Seeds of Lynnville, IA, that provided the native prairie mix.

It’s safe to say that the experiment’s first year yielded plenty of furrowed foreheads and raised eyebrows as passers-by gawked through their windows.

That’s okay!

Last winter, our broodmares (a female horse used for breeding), had food and protection. After burning the pasture in the spring, the native grasses went to work building soil aggregates. Aggregates play a crucial role in soil structure, porosity, water retention, and nutrient availability, influencing soil health and productivity.

Our most astounding discovery we hope encourages others: Nothing happens overnight. What’s been plowed over in a matter of hours with generations of conventional farming takes years to re-build. There’s very little feed value the first few years. Yet, we believe that someone has to take the time to try it. Why not us?

The mares will be turned out again this winter, and the pasture burned this spring. By summer, we’re optimistic there will be healthier soil and forage—even if it means chopping a few thistles!
