Hurricane Lala brought strong winds, heavy rain and widespread power and communication outages to the Big Island last weekend.

While some of the most serious damage occurred farther south, the Kohala Coast also felt the effects of the storm.

For those on the mainland who own property here or are considering a future home on the Kohala Coast, I’m always happy to provide a local perspective on conditions in a particular community.

For generations, shave ice has been a favorite island treat, and at Original Big Island Shave Ice Co, Inc., that tradition runs deep. Their story began in 1957 when Lorraine Kaono, known as the original “ice master,” began serving shave ice in West Hawaiʻi. Today, her family continues that tradition with handcrafted shave ice and recipes passed down through generations.

From classic favorites like Rainbow to specialty creations and Hawaiʻi-inspired flavors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
