Two things to know before you snorkel Kamaole Beach II in Kihei.

The sandy middle of the beach is for swimming. The two ends are where it gets interesting: there is reef at either end, with tide pools to poke around and coral, fish and turtles once you put a mask on.

1. Coral is alive. Do not stand on it, kick it or touch it.
2. Wait to buy sunscreen until you land. Hawaii was the first state to ban the sale of sunscreens with coral-harming chemicals, and plenty of bottles labelled reef-safe on the mainland do not meet the standard here.

The rest of how things work at The Hale Pau Hana on Kamaole Beach II, more or less:

1. The pool is open 8am to 8pm.
2. Quiet hours are 8pm to 8am.
3. Lawn chairs are for relaxing, not for towels saving a spot for three hours.
4. Anything thrown or flown belongs on the beach, not the lawn.
5. Be nice to people. The folks next door are your neighbors for the week.

That is more or less why it is so calm here.

Every Thursday, everyone staying at The Hale Pau Hana in Kihei is invited down to the lawn.

It is a pupu party, which means you bring a plate of something and a drink, and you leave knowing the people from two floors up. Some guests have been catching up with the same friends on this grass, right above Kamaole Beach II, for years. Every so often a local musician turns up too.

No ticket, no wristband. Just come down.

Some guests park the car in Kihei on day one and do not touch it again until the drive back to the airport.

It is not hard to see why. Kamaole Beach II is out front. The pool is steps away. There are natural food and liquor stores right across the street, and restaurants within easy walking distance. Your parking spot is free, and it will still be there.

Maui has plenty worth driving to. It is just nice to know you do not have to.

Sixth floor over Kamaole Beach II in Kihei, and the sofa is the second brightest thing in the room.

Save this for arrival day on Maui: how to stock the kitchen before you even reach Kihei.

1. Costco is right by the airport. Go on the way in.
2. Foodland is just up the road from us.
3. There are natural food and liquor stores right across the street.
4. Every unit has a full kitchen, and there are BBQ grills on the lawn above Kamaole Beach II.

On the nights you would rather not cook, there are restaurants within easy walking distance, some right across the street, and Kihei's food truck parks are worth the trip.

Two bedrooms, two baths, fourth floor, straight over Kamaole Beach II in Kihei.

This is Unit 407. The oceanfront bedroom has twin beds that can be made up as a king. The second has a king and its own bath. There is a queen sleeper sofa in the living room, and the whole unit is air conditioned. Kids welcome.

Unit 306 on Kamaole Beach II in Kihei: your own washer and dryer, a w**e cooler, and that lanai.

This is the one you unpack properly in. Filtered water through the whole unit, multi-panel glass sliders that open the living room onto a teak-furnished lanai, and two baths, both with walk-in showers.
