Two bedrooms, two baths, and the Pacific straight off a big private lanai.

Kihei Beach 302 is upgraded and tiled throughout, with a granite and stainless kitchen for the nights you would rather cook and the lanai for eating what you cooked. The main bedroom has a king, its own bathroom and a big window onto the ocean. The second has two twins and its own bath with a walk-in shower, and the sleeper sofa takes it to six. Central air, ceiling fans, and a washer and dryer inside the unit.

Kihei Beach Resort is small and quiet, with a pool and a lawn running out to the sand, and the shoreline heads north for miles toward Ma'alaea. It is the beach you walk in the morning.

Seventy-four of the seventy-four condos we manage have their own kitchen.

It changes the shape of a trip. Breakfast happens on the lanai in whatever you slept in, a cooler gets packed for the beach, and the fish from the market is cooked the night you buy it. After a week of that, a restaurant meal becomes an occasion again instead of a daily chore.

The b**r is brewed on the other side of the wall.

Maui Brewing has been making b**r on the island since 2005, and the Kihei restaurant sits at the brewery headquarters, with thirty-six taps, an open-air room and garden seating outside. Start with the ahi poke stack or the pretzels with IPA b**r cheese, and let the table work through a flight. Brewery tours can be booked.

Happy hour runs every day from three to five, and on weekends the doors open at nine for breakfast.

Best New Restaurant on Maui in the 2025 ʻAipono Awards, with the harbor out the window.

Chef Zach Sato built Havens out of meal kits, a takeout counter and a food truck, and the room at Ma'alaea Harbor is where it landed. The menu runs from kimchee crab wontons and poi falafel to verde fish tacos, dayboat fish and chips and an award-winning smashburger.

Happy hour is short and early, three to half past four, so plan the afternoon around it. Lunch from eleven, dinner from five.

Kealia sits on Sugar Beach, which is the long, calm, sandy stretch of North Kihei that most people drive past on their way to somewhere more famous.

Unit 407 is on the fourth floor with a full kitchen, a large master bedroom, and a lanai with the ocean off to one side. A king in the bedroom, a twin in the alcove, and a queen sofa sleeper in the living room, so it sleeps three comfortably without anybody camping in a hallway. Its own washer and dryer, which matters more than it sounds by day nine.

Downstairs the lawn runs out to the palms and the grills, and past them the sand goes for a couple of miles in each direction. It is the kind of beach you walk in the morning rather than stake out for the day, and in winter the whales work the water off Ma'alaea in plain sight of it.

Ten minutes from Kihei town, a short drive to Wailea and the road up Haleakala.

Makai. On the seaside, toward the sea. The other half of mauka.

Last month's word was mauka, toward the mountain. This is its other half. Makai means toward the sea, and on Maui it does the job that north, south, left and right do everywhere else. The beach park is makai of the highway. The lanai faces makai. If someone local tells you the turn is on the makai side, look toward the water and you will find it.

Top floor, front row, and the neighbor islands on the horizon.

Kuleana 719 is a one-bedroom on the water in Honokowai, the quieter stretch of the West Maui coast between Ka'anapali and Kapalua. From the lanai you look out at Moloka'i and Lana'i over water that stays that shade of aqua most of the year, and because this side of the island faces west, the evenings end with the sun going down over the ocean.

Inside it is small and bright: tile floors, a full kitchen, a queen bed with its own air conditioning, and a sofa sleeper that takes it to four. Down on the grounds there is a cove where the reef fish and the green sea turtles are.

Book it for longer than a week. That is what it is for.

Forty-five of the seventy-four condos we manage are oceanfront.

Oceanfront means the building sits right at the water, with the ocean in front of the lanai. Another twenty-two look at the ocean from a little further back, four have a partial view, and three face gardens, one of them our only three-bedroom.

The view is the biggest single difference between one of our condos and the next, so it is the first thing worth deciding. Whale season is coming, and an oceanfront lanai is the best seat there is.

For the table that can never agree on dinner.

Three's Bar & Grill has been in Kihei Kalama Village since 2010, run by three chef-owners who each brought a different cuisine: Asian, Southwestern and Pacific Rim. That is exactly why it works for a family or a group. Somebody wants sushi, somebody wants poke, somebody wants the oysters that are flown in daily, and the kids have their own plates.

Happy hour runs every afternoon from three to six, and the small plates can quietly turn into dinner.

If there are kids on this trip, you are going to Ululani's. Probably more than once.

Hawaiian shave ice is a different thing from a snow cone. The ice is shaved so fine that it soaks up the syrup all the way through, instead of leaving a slush at the bottom of the cup. Let the kids pick three flavors with no guidance from you. If you are an adult, ask for ice cream underneath. It will be dripping by the last spoonful and nobody will mind.

There are four on Maui: Kihei on South Kihei Road, Kahului, Wailuku, and the newest one inside the Maui Ocean Center at Ma'alaea harbor, where you do not need an aquarium ticket to get to the counter.
