A Sliver on the River

A Sliver on the River Join us as we build our dream custom cabin on the Shenandoah River.

Our replacement windows and custom exterior doors finally made their way onto a container ship sailing to us from Poland.

To say we’re excited is an understatement.

Our building timeline was slightly thrown off due to a window miscommunication with our engineer. It ended up working in our favor as Debesto launched an amazing door line that we pivoted to.

Our builder will finally be able to get back to what they do best- building.

Some of the biggest decisions when building a home are the ones you notice every single day.

For us, the windows and doors were always going to be an important part of the design. We wanted clean lines, beautiful proportions, plenty of natural light, and a connection between the inside and the outside. 🪟✨

We ordered our windows and doors from Debesto Poland, and it’s been exciting to see them finally become part of the house.

There’s something special about watching the spaces come together — one window, one door, one detail at a time.

Can’t wait to share the amazing front and side entry doors once they are in.

Another detail taking shape on this project.

Our cable railing system is installed, providing a clean, modern finish while maintaining an open, unobstructed view.

We’re looking forward to seeing all the details for this project come together.

We wanted our cabin to have character- thoughtful interior details, beautiful ceiling lines and rooflines that felt intentional from every angle. Our builder took that vision and brought it to life in a way that exceeded what we had hoped for.

The level of engineering and craftsmanship that went into this roof is truly unbelievable. From the way the rooflines flow with the design of the cabin to details you notice once you step inside, every element was carefully considered.

We’re so grateful to have a builder who understood what we were envisioning and that has the skill and attention to detail to execute it so beautifully.

Some of the best family traditions start with the simplest moments.
On our way to check out the cabin build,
we made our usual stop at our favorite detour restaurant.
It's more than just a stop along the way now. It's becoming part of our story, a little tradition we look forward to every trip.

We may be building a cabin, but along the way, we're building memories, creating new traditions, and giving our family moments we'll talk about for years to come.

Here's to the places, meals, and little rituals that become part of what "home" means.

Week O - CFB is back!!!

We were hoping to be watching College Football from the lanai of our new build, cold drink in hand...but we're a little behind schedule, so instead of breaking in the new build with football, we've settled in for some home sweet home football this weekend.

New cabin: Still under construction
Us: Still ready for football

Buy Land Then Wait…

We are one step closer to turning our Sliver on the River into a place where we can get away. It took over a year for us to break ground from the time we closed on our land. There was a lot of waiting, planning, dreaming, and patience required - but we’re so excited for what’s ahead.

When you find your land, don’t wait to buy, they aren’t making any more of it. What’s available today may not be available tomorrow. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and trust the process. We didn’t think we would be able to build any time soon, but we knew we could enjoy the lot recreationally until it was time to build- and that time came sooner than we realized was possible.

The dirt is ours. Our dream is in motion. Now we wait for the build to finish!

Do Your Homework! Five Things We Considered During Our Land Search
1. Land Records
Review the deed, property boundaries, easements, liens, and other recorded documents. What you see on the ground isn't always the full story.
2. Zoning Ordinances
Make sure the property is zoned for your intended use. There are some properties that may be grandfathered in, but you could be looking at a non-conforming lot that may result in not being able to build.
3. Perc-ability
If the land isn't served by public sewer, you need to find out whether it can support a septic system, which is a critical factor in determining whether the land is buildable.
4. Excavation/Topography
Slope, soil conditions, drainage, rock, wetlands, and the amount of excavation needed can dramatically affect your construction costs.
5. Proximity to Utilities
Check how close the property is to necessary utilities. Getting services to a remote parcel can become a significant expense.

A piece of land can look like a great deal until you discover the costs and restrictions hiding beneath the surface.
