Peatlands are among the most important natural climate solutions in the world because peatland soils (also called histosols) store vast amounts of carbon accumulated over millennia. Peatlands also support biodiversity, improve water quality, and reduce flood risk. Peatland soils are also abundant in several areas of the state, including within Wisconsin’s portion of the Lake Michigan Basin.

The WI Wetlands Assoc announces a new project to establish a Peatlands Conservation Partnership in the Lake Michigan basin. The project is a collaboration between Wisconsin Wetlands Association, The Nature Conservancy Wisconsin, and The Pew Charitable Trusts.

As with many of our breeding plans, our Crane Conservation Department staff utilized assisted reproduction techniques to produce fertile eggs. Only one of the females, Gimli, was selected to produce fertile eggs so that we could be confident in the chick’s parentage.
