Here’s a little Town of Mentone, Alabama history ⛪️🪨✝️
On Lookout Mountain near Mentone sits a little chapel built in 1937, and its back wall is a giant boulder.
It is the Sallie Howard Memorial Chapel in DeKalb County. Colonel Milford W. Howard built it in memory of his first wife, Sallie, with help from the mountain people who lived nearby.
They built the church right up against a massive boulder, and that rock forms the back wall of the chapel. The altar was made from stones gathered from the Little River.
A historical marker went up beside the chapel in 2013, and it still stands at County Road 165 and County Road 617. The chapel was deeded to the DeKalb Baptist Association in 1974, and nearly 90 years after it was built, it is still an active church.
