Monday Motivation:

Our Ocean.

Our Obligation.

Our Opportunity.

Our HOME.

The ocean isn't just our view, it's our soul.

This World Ocean Day, we celebrate the waters that shape our island lifestyle and connect our community in ways words can't capture.

It can be magical to live on an island; it can also be challenging. Regardless, we love and respect the water that SURROUNDS us.

Boating, fishing, beaching, shelling, and exploring, EVERYTHING starts with the water. It’s why you visit here. It’s why we live here.

When nature feels like home, you protect it like family.

Today, and every day, we celebrate alllllll of that majesty and grandeur.

We invite you to do the same.

Everything I Need To Know About Ocracoke I Learned On Howard Street:

Slow down.

Speak to everyone, especially young people and dogs.

Eventually, someone will bring you a cake, a fish, shrimp, or deer.

Stay hungry for life.

Walking through cemeteries can teach you how to talk to the living.

Living next to a graveyard helps you to stay in touch with your mortality by reminding you to live fully.

There are always forks in the road.

When you're lost, someone will come along and tell you where you are.

You should ask a neighbor for help.

Islands are isolated but people don't have to be.

Connect with the others around you.

A small light can brighten the darkest places.

Community has a distinctive sound. When all else fails, listen - someone will be singing or playing your way home.

Look out for golf carts and look both ways before you cross the street.

We are custodians of the island. We pass everything on to someone else.

Beautifully written by the late
Richard Bryant,
former Pastor of OUMC

And lovingly shared by his wife, Mary Bryant

(The Parsonage was on Howard Street during their time here)

So many fish tales to tell - and yet to be told - because this is how we do Tuesdays, or ANY day really, on Ocracoke.

Patiently waiting to feel a tug on the line….

No stress.

No shoes.

No schedule.

Just sunshine, salt air, sandy feet, waves rolling in, and the kind of freedom that reminds you what life's really about.

Because out here, we don't chase weekends — we celebrate everyday.

Monday Motivation:
🦶 GO BAREFOOT!
and, also help us wish Byron a very
🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

🛠️ This guy works super hard to keep us, and the Inn straight…he even (reluctantly) participates in the silliness and shenanigans of the office. We appreciate all he does to keep this place in tip-top shape…

🍺 The Barefoot Executive is tanning his toes in the Abacos for his special day...at his favorite place in the world, Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas. You will find him at his MOST favorite place, Sundowners, tonight (and every night-feel free to call them and order him a beer! )

🦶 Coincidentally, (or not), June 1st is always National Go Barefoot Day!!
(but as we all know, Byron is barefoot EVERY day! 🤣)
Help us celebrate Byron by going barefoot today, or drinking a Kalik!!!

to the 🦀Ocracoke Crab Festival.

🦀ROLL CALL: Who was there? Who remembers it it? Any stories you’d like to share with the group? 😜

🦀Before ALLLLLLL of the festivals, and scheduled events that now happen on the island, there was only ONE major event on the island. One that stood apart from the others…and always will.

🦀The OG of Ocracoke music, fun, shenanigans and community.

🦀The GOAT of all island gatherings.

🦀People still reminisce about it…longing for a simpler time.

🦀Every now and then, you’ll hear conversations, whispered with reverence, of “bringing it back.”

🦀And then all of the tales and stories of silliness and “misbehavior” start pouring out, like a Jimmy Buffet song. “Remember when so-and-so, did such-and-such?”

🦀But times have changed; the Crab Festival has to stay where it is…in the idyllic mists of nostalgia and yesteryear.

🦀A lot of the folks in this video are still here. A lot aren’t. If you love Ocracoke, it’s worth a deep dive into learning more, ask folks about it, google it, read Philip Howard’s blog… see what shows up.

Ocracoke residents and visitors gather on the docks for a day of music- and crab-pickin', May 3, 1986.
