So as the season comes to a close soon so must the Downtown Dave posts. I will do one more to close out the year in a few weeks. I am going to list the next 3 weeks of music this week before the year end post to wrap up the 2026 season.
So this week's thoughts are about making plans and setting goals. So this week has been busy and I have almost a sold out house all week and weekend. Most of the guests are staying for 5 days this week. That gave me time to start planning my winter trips. So my winter travels are just about done but I have room for some changes if needed. I had to work around my city council meetings and a few cruises already planned. But after that was done I decided I need to start planning more than this winter. Keep that thought till the end when I talk long term First lets discuss short term goals. So being in sales most of my life I was taught to plan out sales goals. It is not just planning sales goals but what will I have to do to hit those goals. Just putting a sales number out there without a plan to reach that goal is a waste of time. I always was one to set a realistic goal that I could achieve because I never wanted to fail. But many times when I would exceed the goal I would set I would always try to do more. But of course everytime I did well I would set the bar a little higher. I never wanted to settle for just being average. Every person that competes in sports, professional or amatuer always wants to do better. They have a plan. So if you are a baseball player hitting 270 every year and you know if you hit 300 you will get paid a lot more. The difference between hitting 270 and 300 is only 18 more hits over a season if you have 600 at bats. The pay raise that you will get is huge if you bat 300. Just think how you can get those 18 extra hits. You can bunt for a hit, you can stop pulling the ball and hit to the opposite side for an example. I am going to use Steven Kwan as that example. For the first half of the year he was hitting barely 200 and he made some changes to his stance and swing and since those changes he is hitting over 340 since then. He went from almost dead last in batting average in the American league to 9th in batting the American league. Because of that he will get a huge contract in the off season.
So that is a lesson. In life if you have goals and dreams figure out what you have to do to achieve those goals. This does not just apply to sales. It applies to everyday life. No goal is out of reach if you really want it.
Now my short term goals lesson is over now we are looking long term. After my winter plans were planned I decided to look longer term. Starting this week I am going to make plans for the next 5,10 and 15 years. Where do I want to be, what do I want to see, where do I want to live and what do I have to do to achieve those goals and dreams. I guess you can call it a bucket list. Throughout my life I have always set short term goals. I do not think that I have ever looked that far in the future. Now will the plans for 15 years away maybe change. Of course they will but I need to have an outline of the time in the future. I have all off season to make the plans. Maybe when Downtown Dave comes back and gets ready for the 2027 season I will share some of those plans with all of you. But now it is time for you to plan another trip to Put in Bay this year. Still lots of great music and fun events to see in the 2026 season.

Hopefully I will see you before the 2026 season is over

Well only a few more posts to go for the 2026 season omn Put in Bay.

So last Saturday night I stayed home. This was the first Saturday night all season at Put in Bay that I decided not to go out. I am surprised that nobody called me to see if I was feeling okay. LOL. But it was a very busy week and I just felt that I needed a nice quiet night. Or maybe after watching Ohio State lose I was bummed. But I determined many years ago that I would not let a sports team that I root for control my life. Being a Cleveland Sports fan I have my share of losses in my lifetime. But then again I am not that young anymore but maybe I go out all of the time because of FOMO. That is The Fear Of Missing Out. I have really thought alot about that term and if I really have that disease? In some ways I think I do but then again it is just my way of enjoying what life has to offer. I really do not have a fear of missing out on anything because I sort of do whatever I want. I have been pretty independent all of my life. I have been very fortunate to have the philosophy to learn from the past but live in the present. That has allowed me to start everyday like it is the beginning of my life. But I need to share a few thoughts about my guests here at Ashley's Island House. So first I want to include an email from somebody that stayed with us last week.

Hi Dave,

After being away from Put-in-Bay for about 45 years, returning last week was deeply meaningful. I spent every summer there from 1955 through 1972, when my grandparents had a summer home on Peach Point. Those were some of the most wonderful childhood summers anyone could imagine. My wife was visiting the island for the first time, and she absolutely fell in love with it.
Ashley’s Island House made our return even more special. Dave is an exceptional host—warm, helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely dedicated to making his guests feel welcome. He took time to share his extensive local knowledge and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived.

The house is charming, spotless, comfortable, and perfectly located just a short walk from downtown, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Our room was cozy, the bed was wonderfully comfortable, and even the towels were remarkably soft. Breakfast each morning was excellent, with plenty of choices, and the inviting front porch became one of our favorite places to relax and visit after a day on the island.

Whether you are visiting Put-in-Bay for the first time or returning to reconnect with treasured memories, Ashley’s Island House is the place to stay. We could not recommend it more highly—and we will definitely be back.

This is why I have the bed and breakfast on Put in Bay. The positive memories that I make for people. That review is more important than the money that they paid me to stay.
Then I had a guest check in today and brought me a bottle of Rum from the outer banks. Now in really analyzing this it is very humbling that they were on vacation and thought of me and went to trouble to buy the bottle just to bring it back and give it to me. They are not the only ones that do this. My boss from 1982-1990 tried to stay with us this week but we were full but he did rent a golf cart from us and he brought me a real nice bottle of bourbon. He did not have to do that. My bourbon collection is growing weekly from all of the additions from my guests. I wish that I bought the B and B a long time ago. But life has a way of taking you down a different path at times and I have enjoyed all of the twists and turns that I have been on.

So I will make a brief mention of my Sports teams. I will always be a fan win or lose. Yesterday I decided to drive to Cleveland and watch them play a game that if they won they would be in first place. They won and it was a great game. It brought back many memories of all of the games I have saw there. Will they go on and win the World Series? I doubt it but you can dream.
Now my pitiful Browns. I hate to say this but they are becoming tough to watch. But of course I will still be there next week in person. Am I stupid to waste money on them. Well I have said many times humans are creatures of habit and I guess since I have only missed 2 home games since 1979 I have been stupid for a long time. But I will probably still continue going. If you are one of those also that will be attending the game stop by the tailgate at 386 West Lakeside dowtown. We should have over 150 people and I put together a nice spread. The Browns will probably lose again but we never lose a tailgate.

So on to this weeks schedule. Still lots of great entertainment on the island and remember it is not to early to make plans for the 2027 season on Put in Bay. It will be Put in Bays 150th Birthday.

You will notice a few changes in the band schedule from last weeks post

So the original reason for this weekly post is because a few years ago Paul Jeris came up to me and asked me if I wanted to write a column for Putinbay.com. I asked why? He said he reads my weekly facebook posts and watches all of the videos of bands that I post on a regular basis and he said he thought the readers would enjoy the list of live music. Then he decided to give me the name downtown Dave because I am always downtown Put in Bay. So that is why every week I share my thoughts and give the readers the band schedule. That will bring me to this weeks post. So as many of you know the Fulcos played at the B**r Barrel a lot this season. They played 66 shows. Now I did not see every show but I did my best to maybe watch them play at least 20 times. Why? Well there set list was always different and they played a lot of songs that I have not heard live in a long time. Plus I would watch them and they would come and watch me play softball. They would also give me a shout out when they played a Green Day song. ( They are one of my favorites) Sometimes I would watch them play for 30 minutes sometimes I would stay a few hours. I do like a lot of the other musicians that play. But for me they became like family. You see them out and about and we would just talk and I got to learn about them as a family and as a band. They called me last week and needed an 6am ride to the Miller Ferry. They had a few days off and wanted to go home to Florida for a few days. I said it was too early for me but stop over and get a golf cart from me and leave it at the Miller Ferry and I would pick it up later that day. So on Saturday night I was there watching the Fulcos and Jessie was playing a bass guitar for maybe 3 songs and after he was done he unplugged it and gave it to me. Now they do that on other shows when they play in Florida but it was not a regular occurrence on Put in Bay. So for me it was special. I even got a special shout out about softball and my post on promoting live music on Put in Bay. So on Sunday I went back for there last show to get the guitar signed. Also I had a Green Day concert shirt from a show about 10 years ago that I wanted to give to Jessie. I am not an autograph hound or somebody that looks a musicians as special people. It is just a profession that they choose in life. I am sure that most of you if you put the time into it like the Fulcos you could be a musician also. So we talked for a bit before they played that night and I learned more about them. They are no different then me. Just a lot younger. The dad is close to my age and still rocking. Now the guitar will be hung in my office but I am going to try to learn how to play it. Why? I really do not know but I have enough time this off season to try.

So then we have a celebration every year when the last boat leaves the island on Labor Day. Well I talk to everybody especially the musicians. So I was talking to Pat Shepard for a few minutes. I really do enjoy his shows but being he plays during the afternoon I do not see him as often as I like because my afternoons are busy with guests. But after we were done I started walking away and he walked back towards me and thanked me for doing this column every week and talking about the bands. That is really the reason I do this. The Thank You that I get from the musicians and the people that reach out in person about my thoughts every week gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling that I am doing a good job and people enjoy my posts. So in your job if you supervise workers or have coworkers give compliments. It would surprise you how that makes them feel. It is even more important with your children.

I do want to mention an event coming up the 15th-17th. We have the Put in Bay Road races. It is a free event and always a lot of fun. I bet if you attend you will come back every year.

Time for Labor Day weekend. This is the last 3 day weekend of 2026. Still time to visit us on Put in Bay. Great entertainment schedule this weekend. But 1st what is Labor Day?

It is observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.

Do you know how we celebrate it on Put in Bay every year. We have a party of course. It is unofficially called white spider. Everybody gathers at the Miller Ferry Dock and waves off the last boat of the summer season. Now the Miller Ferry will run until at least December and a few times even to Jan 1st. So it is really not the last boat but it is just another reason for Put in Bay to have a party. This is an awesome gathering of workers and business owners to celebrate the end of the tourist season. Now we have many more events all the way till Oct 24th weekend so you still have lots of time to come up and enjoy the island. I will highlight some of the events Like Halfway to St Pattys day, Fall Ball and of course Halloween before Downtown Dave goes on vacation for the winter.

Time for the next 10 days music schedule.

08/27/2026

So today is time to reflect a bit. This week has been an interesting week because I have a big number birthday coming up in 9 months. I know that is really a long time away but then again it is closer than you think. I always celebrate milestone Birthdays with a big party and the next one will be no different. I already have started to plan for it. But the reason for my reflection this week is my future. How long will I live? How long can I really do what I am doing right now? How many more years can I still play softball during the summer? How much longer can I go out every Friday and Saturday night? I see other people my age and they have definitely slowed down and they have decided to be a spectator instead of somebody that participates. I know that eventually I will do the same but I am going to fight it as long as I can. Thankfully I am healthy and my family lifeline is long but you never know what can happen.
Going through life I have always done my best to live in the present and not the past. The past has shaped who I am but I will not go and try and relive mistakes that I have made. I refuse to go backwards and I prefer to plan ahead for my future. That is why I have had many thoughts this week because I started planning all of my winter trips. I am a planner but I also do a lot of spur of the moment things. I also have had a few business opportunities lately that people have asked me about but I have so far declined. That does not mean that I will not get into something else but I am looking at my future a bit differently now. In writing these columns every week it gives me an outlet to express and share my thoughts about my life and where it has taken me. It usually takes me an hour and a half to do every post and out of that is about 30 minutes of self reflection to decide on what I am going to write in this post. This is really good for me to really think about life and where it can take me. It is like a weekly self evaluation. Plus it reminds me of how happy I am to be with all of you. Many of you I have met in person and you have shared moments of your life with me. Some of you are in chapters of my book of life and some of you are just a paragraph and some of you I have never met but every one is very important. My job every week writing this column is to give you information on live music on Put in Bay plus give you something to think about. Live music is a great thing because it creates memories. A lot of songs tell a story that you can relate to. Songs can make you happy and they can make you sad. But when you hear a favorite song it will bring up a memory. Most times it will make you smile. But also make you think about yourself and life in general. Can reading my posts change your life? Probably not but maybe it will help you understand and appreciate what you have. So make sure that you are a participant in life not a spectator.

As you can see from this week's music schedule a lot of the venues do not have daily music scheduled. But that should not stop you from coming to Put in Bay. The weather is still fantastic and there is still lots to do on the island. Sometimes just taking a walk through the many parks on the island will do a lot for somebody's mental health. Or even finding a place to watch the sunset with somebody special can make a day special.

Okay time for the music
