Just a mile and a half off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Springmaid Mountain is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Open year-round, all cabins include satellite television, cooking utensils, kitchen appliances, microwave, coffee pot, towels and bed linens.

Joe Glenn has been part of Springmaid Mountain for more than 20 years, starting as a part-time horseback trail guide before eventually becoming General Manager.

One of his favorite memories came in July 2021, just a few weeks before Anne Springs Close passed away.

Anne had come back to Springmaid with a basket of peaches and wanted to make the walk up toward her cabin at the Overlook. Joe walked with her, and along the way, she told him the story of how she first came to Springmaid Mountain.

She had been looking for a place in the mountains where kids could escape the summer heat, attend horse camp and learn to ride. Then she came here and hiked to the waterfalls.

“That’s what sold me on it.”

Today, the trail leading toward those waterfalls bears her name. More than 40 years after Anne first fell in love with this place, Joe is now one of the people helping care for it and carry that vision forward.

Of all the places Anne Springs Close loved, her son Ell says Springmaid Mountain was the place she would choose when she wanted to get away.

She spent summers here during horse camp. She rode horses, hiked the trails and escaped to her cabin on the hill. Her love for the property ultimately shaped what Springmaid would become and the way it is still cared for today.

More than 40 years later, much of what Anne loved about this place is still here: the woods, the trails, the horses, the river and the opportunity to simply get outside.

As Ell put it, if people who come here today feel even a little of what his mother felt for this property, that’s a tribute to her.

And perhaps that’s one of the best ways to carry a legacy forward.

Maybe the itinerary is the problem.

We’re so used to planning a trip around what we’re going to do next. Where are we eating? What are we seeing? What time do we need to leave? What can we fit in before dinner?

And then there are places where sitting beside the river for an hour feels like a perfectly good use of the afternoon.

No reservations. No schedule. No need to be anywhere else.

Maybe getting away doesn’t always need an itinerary.
