We live in Volcano Village, in a house neighboring the Kilauea rentals, and are available to assist guests with any problems or questions that they might have during their stay. The three houses on Kilauea Volcano are all neighbors on a small lane running through the residential historic district of Volcano Village, just outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The house on Mauna Kea Volcano, "Io's Nest", is situated in a remote location overlooking the Hamakua Coast.

A couple of days ago I posted a video of current activity at Kilauea Volcano, and someone commented that they'd seen one of the earlier episodes in this series and it was "nothing like this spectacular view" 😍! I assured them that all of the past 54 episodes, from the time this eruptive series began on 23 Dec 2024, were more spectacular than what we are seeing now. It's just that the current action is very small in comparison so all the videos and photos are super zoomed in, making it look really grand! To emphasize what I'm saying, here are two photos that I took from the approximate same spot on Uekahuna in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park using the same zoom setting. The bottom photo is the largest fountain I've seen from the current action (precursory to Episode 55) and the top photo is from Episode 38 on 6 Dec 2025. Use the USGS instruments and bushes along the caldera edge to aid in comparing the scenes. Granted, Episode 38 was one of our biggest, with fountaining up to 1260 ft, but the small blips that are happening now, 50 ft height at best, don't even count as episodes. Would I rush over here to see the current volcanic activity? No I would not. Something seems to be brewing, with the pressure at the summit remaining super high, but it's not happening yet.

Kilauea's Pu'u O'o vent, 12 miles east of the volcano's summit in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, erupted for over 35 years before it collapsed in 2018. I took this photo on May 3rd of that year, three days after the bottom fell out of the lava lake and it was belching one of its final pink plumes -- covering everything for miles around in the fine pinkish-red volcanic ash. Shortly after that, the collapse of Halema'uma'u vent at Kilauea's summit prompted the closure of the park and what ensued was a period of great unrest here in the community of Volcano as the earthquakes generated by the ongoing collapse went on for months... As the lava was draining from Halema'uma'u there was fear of an eventual interaction between the magma and the ground water in the deep collapsed pit, that could theoretically trigger a dangerous steam-driven explosion -- and this possibility prompted the installation of a warning siren in Volcano Village -- something that we had never had before. So what I'm saying, in this current time of change at Kilauea's summit... for visitors and for new residents to our area... are you aware of this siren that is installed at Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano? This siren is tested at 11:45am on the first working day of every month -- and if you hear it go off at a different time, then you need to seek information about the warning. My first action would be to check the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency site on Facebook.

Last night, 12 Oct 2026, Kilauea Volcano's North Vent put on a show! The summit remains highly pressurized and much of the magma near the surface is degassed. In order for fountaining to resume, the heavy degassed magma has to be moved out to let the gas-rich underlayers rise up! Maybe last night's action helped with that!

Textures and colors of the lava on Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes... on the flats, in the vents, in the pits and in the tubes... It's always rewarding to wander the endless miles of lava on the Big Island of Hawaii and to find beauty in the raw.

In this photo from Kilauea's Episode 53, you can see a long crack leading from the vent complex to the edge of the caldera. The USGS reports that some of these cracks, many of which stem from the 2018 collapse, are widening as shallow magma migrates through the caldera, exploiting existing fracture systems. As a cautionary measure, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed the Keanakakoi Overlooks on the south side of Kilauea Caldera and the portion of Crater Rim Trail that leads to Keanakakoi Crater. Additionally, the Halema'uma'u Trail, that runs through the farthest eastern section of the caldera floor has been closed, along with a section of the Byron Ledge Trail -- presumably the portion that runs along the southeastern edge of the caldera from which I took this photo. Kilauea Caldera remains highly pressurized and the USGS states that the current volcanic activity is "evidence of growing instability in the system that may result in significant change". Using a simple application of the proverbial cat-in-the-box, I think I may have solved the problem of Spotted Doves congregating on the luggage rack of Todd's car 💩. Now I just have to hope that cat doesn't get taken for a ride... 🙀
