Today is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii. It is a state holiday honoring King Kamehameha I, the leader who united the Hawaiian Islands. You will see lei draping ceremonies on his statues across the islands, and while the parade in Kailua-Kona was on the 6th this is still a great week to learn the history. If you are staying in Volcano Village this week, the village stays low-key, and the park is open. Enjoy this meaningful week on the Big Island.

A little update from your Volcano neighbors. Kīlauea just wrapped up its 48th round of lava fountaining on June 1, a new record for a single eruption here. Right now, things are paused, and the alert level is back down, but the summit is still active, and scientists say another episode could start in the coming weeks. If a volcano view is part of your trip, it's worth checking the status before you come, and the official USGS page is the best place to do that. When activity picks up, the glow can sometimes be seen from overlooks inside the park, weather and conditions permitting. Ask us before you go, and we will be glad to point you toward current viewing spots once you're here. Our guide to visiting Volcanoes National Park.

Aloha from Volcano Village, The 'ōhi'a are blooming, the trade winds are back, and the days are long enough to fit two adventures and still make it back to the lanai for sunset. We are also excited to announce that Volcano Village Lodge was voted the #1 Best Bed & Breakfast or Inn on the Island of Hawai'i by Hawai'i Magazine readers. Mahalo to everyone who voted. We are humbled.

Inside, you will find two summer-ready blog posts, a closer look at our Mauna Kea room, a few island events worth catching, a kind word from a recent guest, and a Father's Day gift idea to wrap up with a bow.
