Late October brings the Orionid meteor shower, which peaks around October 21–22 each year, to the night sky over Volcano Village, and we offer one of the best places on the island to watch it.

Cooler air, dark skies, and a quiet spot on the crater rim make for a good show. You don't need to go to the Mauna Kea summit to watch the show. Read our guide to stargazing in Volcano Village for more ways to spend the night here.

We know our guests will be sad to learn this. The Holei Sea Arch has collapsed after being unstable for some time. The ocean is a constant reminder of how powerful it is. Share your memories.

The beloved Hōlei Sea Arch collapsed September 27, 2026

This impressive sea arch was cut into the cliff of an ancient lava flow from about 550 years ago due to "differential erosion", referring the difference in the hardness of various layers of lava. Located at the end of Chain of Cratets Road this stark lava rock formation was about 90 ft. (27.4 meters) high and extended from the steep sea cliffs into the Pacific Ocean. The exact time of the collapse is unknown and could have occurred when the park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo.

The Hawaiʻi Island Festival of Birds takes place Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo, with the 2026 theme Celebrating Resilience. The event is presented by the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Center and the Conservation Council for Hawaiʻi. The speaker lineup and ticket details had not been published as of late August, so check birdfesthawaii.org for updates. Volcano Village Lodge is roughly a 45-minute drive from Hilo and sits in native rainforest. Check dates:

Fall is harvest season for Big Island coffee, which is a good excuse to send you back to one of our older posts. We wrote about how Kona coffee got here, why the volcanic soil and elevation matter so much, and where you can tour a working farm without driving all the way around the island.

Hilo Coffee Mill is the closest one for guests staying with us. Kona itself is about a 2-hour drive, so plan that as a full day rather than a side trip. The coffee we pour at breakfast comes from this island, and it tastes different when you know how it got in the cup.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

Kīlauea continues to “exhibit heightened unrest with an increased potential for eruption,” according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory update today.

We still don't know if lava fountains will resume or if lower-level activity will stay within the summit vent system. USGS also said that “no anomalous activity has occurred outside the summit region.” Meaning any wonky activity is staying in the summit crater, right where we want it to.

Come and join us for some heightened unrest! Bring binoculars and/or a telephoto lens. Maybe something anomalous will happen.
