Fort Lewis Lodge is open April through October, which makes this the last week of the season to hear its dinner bell.

Evenings on the 3,300-acre farm follow a routine. Buck's Bar opens at 6:30 for b**r and w**e. Around 7:30 the bell rings across the grounds, and a family-style dinner is served in the restored 19th-century Lewis Mill, with vegetables from the farm's own gardens. After dinner there's a fire in the outdoor pavilion and a stargazing platform under a dark country sky.

The Cowden family has owned and run Fort Lewis for more than 65 years, about 20 minutes from the Warm Springs Pools.

Mark your calendars to visit their website mid-January to reserve your trip next year!

Four places to stay for a fall getaway in Bath County, from a resort in its 260th year to a room in an 1843 jail house.

At the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, spend the day golfing or on horseback, then finish it at the spa.

Vine Cottage Inn has welcomed guests since 1905, one block from the Homestead. Breakfast is three courses, the front porch has rocking chairs, and on cool evenings there may be a fire going in the living room.

The Inn at Warm Springs is set in the county's old courthouse and jail, directly across the road from the Warm Springs Pools. Book Room 10 to sleep in the old jail house, then stay in for dinner at the Tavern.

The Inn at Gristmill Square has 18 rooms and suites in restored buildings around the old mill in Warm Springs. Ask for a fireplace room, and save an evening for dinner at the Waterwheel Restaurant.

Long weekend? Here's what's happening in Bath County, Friday through Sunday.

FRIDAY
Take the Fall Foliage History Walk at Douthat State Park, 3 to 4 p.m., starting at the Camp Malone Picnic Shelter. It's about half a mile along the lake, with stories of how the Civilian Conservation Corps shaped the park's early days. Then head to Oakley Farm in Warm Springs for Foodlore Friday, 4 to 8 p.m.

SATURDAY
The BEAR Country Store runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The BEAR in Hot Springs, with local vendors and crafts. From 3 to 4, stay for the Bath County Arts Association's artist reception for "A Second Look," featuring select pieces from the 2026 Bath County Art Show and a section honoring Perlista Henry. The reception is free, and registration is required at bathcountyarts.org.

SUNDAY
Preservation Bath holds its annual lecture and awards at 4 p.m. in the Holstein Barn at the Old Dairy in Warm Springs. Architectural historians Debra McClane and Laura Purvis will share the research behind the county's three historic districts: Hot Springs, Bacova and Warm Springs/West Warm Springs. It's free and open to the public, with a reception after.

ALL WEEKEND
Neighboring Highland County hosts its 34th Hands & Harvest Festival. Head north on Route 220 to Monterey for apple butter, c***r pressing, local maple syrup and crafts.

It's apple season at Oakley Farm in Warm Springs.

Orchards have been part of this farm for well over a century. Today Troddenvale presses Virginia apples, including fruit from Oakley's own trees, and pours its c***r in the farm's North Stable.

On Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m., Foodlore brings a guest chef and live music to the lawn, and local growers set up a small market. Three to plan around: October 9, 16 and 23.

The c***r bar is open Thursday through Sunday. Stop in for a glass or a flight while you're in Warm Springs.

The evening show out here starts around 8:30.

We pull up a chair, the sun slides behind the Alleghenies, and the ridgelines go gold, then violet, then quiet.

We've watched it a thousand times — it hasn't gotten old yet.

An evening at goes like this: world-class chamber music in an intimate mountainside hall, a chef-prepared dinner shared with fellow listeners, and Allegheny stars waiting when the music lets out.

Make it a full getaway: the Manor House and Giles Cottage sleep guests right on the 114-acre property, steps from the hall.

This weekend it's the Grammy-winning Pacifica Quartet (July 24–25), and the concert calendar runs all summer long. Reserve at garthnewel.org. Evenings like these sell out, and for good reason.

Every booth at Goldie's is its own little world. Candles and creams on one shelf, tooled leather on the next, a gallery wall of portraits and prints that have already lived a few lives. That's the charm of a store stocked by collectors and makers, it never reads the same way twice.

Goldie's General Store and Vintage Shopping, in the village of Mitchelltown. When you go, tell us what you found. 👀

Refreshment is a local craft in Bath County.
— Bacova B**r Company : A family-run taproom brewing truth, not trends, with pub food to match.

— At Oakley Farm : Transparency-driven c***rs grown in the high-elevation orchards at Oakley Farm.

— Waterwheel Restaurant At Gristmill Square: a nightcap at one of Virginia's smallest bars, tucked inside a restored gristmill with an award-winning w**e cellar.

Three stops, one very good evening.

Before there was a nation, there were these waters.
Travelers have been "taking the waters" at the Warm Springs Pools since the 1760s — Thomas Jefferson among them, who came seeking relief for his rheumatism and left a believer.

Today, the historic bathhouses still fill with the same warm, mineral-rich water, rising clear from the mountain.

Here's to the next 250 years.

Lake days move slower out here.
Lake Moomaw sits behind 43 miles of undeveloped shoreline in the George Washington National Forest. No boardwalk crowds, no traffic, no rush. Just mountain water, citation-size trout, and an afternoon that asks nothing of you.
Pack a cooler.
