Get close enough and the stripes stop being stripes.

They narrow across the face, bend around the eye, then run the wrong way entirely down the neck. No two animals carry the same pattern, which is how researchers tell one from another.

Zebra are what most people look at while they are waiting for something else to happen. Up close they are one of the strangest animals out here.

And two of them standing nose to tail is not affection. Each one is watching the half of the world the other cannot see.

Today was the first day of spring, and the bush has started letting us know.

It arrives quietly here. A tree comes into flower before anything around it is ready. A bare stick puts out a single leaf. Something small and coral opens at ankle height, where you would only see it if you had stopped walking.

We are still in the dry season, and the waterhole is still doing most of the work. But this is the turn, and it is worth slowing down for.

Not a warning. A statement.

That rasping call is how a leopard holds its ground. It carries further than you would expect through dense bush, announcing presence to anyone listening, which out here is everything.

There is nothing scheduled between drives here at Arathusa Safari Lodge… which is precisely the appeal.

A book, a lounger, and whatever chooses to come down to our waterhole to drink. Some mornings it is a herd, some afternoons a gathering of something else, but the hippos are here all day and every day, mostly submerged and largely unbothered.

It is rather restful out here on the deck. You should try it sometime.

Runway ready. Wrong runway, but the confidence is there.

Two bulls taking their time on the Arathusa airstrip, which is generally what happens when you’re seventeen feet tall and nobody is in a position to argue.

Worth noting: most guests arrive here by air, so there’s a decent chance you’ll meet the locals before you meet your ranger.

Winter mornings ask for nothing in a hurry. The Nkuhuma females fold in close, the way family does when the air is cool and the day is long. Gold all around them, and time to spare.
