One often overlooked highlight in our area is the beautiful Hippo Trail; a 6 hour trail in the Blyde River Canyon (you can make it shorter if you want, some of the best viewpoints are actually at the start of the trails).

The trail follows the contours of the dam, providing different and spectacular views at every turn: from the dam wall to the hippos and the surrounding mountains.

The trail is 14 km (out and back) and moderate to difficult (because of the length and exposure to heat) but very doable during the winter months here (June-August). A true highlight for avid hikers and the best thing: you will likely have the trail mostly to yourself.

Just bring enough water and snacks, a hat, sunscreen and start early in the day.

While the trail is quite straightforward parallel to the dam, it is not always well marked and you have to be aware of hippo so taking a guide with you is advisable. Our guide Difference is happy to take you there!
