Not the prettiest face in the animal kingdom, perhaps. But vultures are some of its most important clean-up crew.

Often portrayed as villains in popular culture, these remarkable birds play a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy by efficiently removing carcasses and helping to limit the spread of disease.

So today, on Vulture Awareness Day, we're giving these often misunderstood birds the recognition they deserve.

Spring has arrived in Greater Makalali, bringing warmer, longer days. Mornings are clear and crisp, but temperatures rise swiftly through the day, making for wonderful time out in the bush.

September is an excellent time for game viewing, with wildlife concentrated around water sources while the landscape begins to transform with the changing season.

Joining us this month? Pack light, breathable layers for the warmer days, a light jacket for early morning game drives, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and your binoculars.

A new chapter in safari has arrived.

Garonga has taken delivery of three new INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster game-drive vehicles, specially converted for safari and designed to offer an intimate, comfortable way to explore the 27,000-hectare Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve.

With a maximum of six guests per vehicle, every seat offers excellent visibility and space to take in the wilderness around you.

A first for Garonga, and potentially a first for Southern Africa. We can't wait to get them out into the bush!

As your afternoon game drive winds its way back to camp, the spotlight comes out and a whole new world begins to stir. This is when many predators become active, while elusive nocturnal creatures - from bush babies and civets to genets and porcupines - emerge under the cover of darkness.

August had other plans. 🌧️

Rain at this time of year is almost unheard of, but The Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve was treated to a wonderfully unseasonal downpour over the last few days.

A rare winter surprise and a welcome drink for the bush. Nature, as always, keeps us guessing.
