As spring arrives at Cape Vulture Nature Reserve, our permaculture garden is bursting into colour.

Here, our flowers are as beautiful as they are functional, from helping with natural pest management and providing ground cover, to drawing in pollinators and some even adding a pop of colour to our plates.

We’re grateful for another season of growth, and for every team member, volunteer and guest who contributes, in their own way, to our flourishing garden.

Our permaculture garden is where conservation meets cultivation.

The Lowveld's sandy soils and intense heat call for a different way of growing food. We draw on permaculture principles rooted in observing and learning from natural systems to work with them: enriching depleted soil with compost and worm castings, protecting it from moisture loss with mulch, and using companion planting to manage pests naturally.

The garden is a space where our team is constantly learning, testing what thrives in this landscape, adapting as each season teaches us something new. This knowledge we then get to pass on to the community and guests that visit our reserve.

In the end, growing food this way isn't so different from protecting a vulture colony. Both start with paying close attention to nature and learning how to build ecosystems that can sustain itself.

🥾 Bush Walk | 08:30 | ±2.5 hours
Kick off the day with a relaxed guided walk through the reserve (6km loop, moderate fitness needed, kids welcome). Get in touch to secure your spot!

🎨 Cyanotype Workshop | 12:30 | ±1.5 hours
Come make something beautiful with us! Create your own A5 cyanotype print using pressed flowers, paired with a talk on medicinal brews you can make at home. Includes a cup of Butterfly Pea Flower tea. No experience needed, ages 16+.
