Spring has arrived in Kaapsehoop 🌱🐴

There are some mornings on the mountain when you round a bend and suddenly find yourself driving through the clouds.

Who has done this coming up to Kaapsehoop? It always makes me think of The Gods Must Be Crazy — that feeling that somewhere up here, you’ve driven straight out of the ordinary world and into the sky.

And this week, spring has brought us something even more special.

Two new foals have been born to the Kaapsehoop wild horses, just a few days apart.

One arrival is particularly wonderful news. The mare who was badly burnt and lost her foal last season has survived, recovered, and has now successfully given birth to a healthy new foal.

And one of our newest little mountain residents already has a name:

Meet Liku. ❤️

After the fires, the dry winter months and everything these horses endure on the mountain, seeing new life arrive with spring feels particularly precious.

Then & Now — from post office to country inn.

In Kaapsehoop's early days, this building was the village Post and Telegraph Office — you can still read the sign in the old photograph. It was how the mountain kept in touch with the world: letters and telegraph wires carrying news up and down the escarpment.

The old post office became the Silver Mist — and when fire later swept through, it was rebuilt on the same ground. Today the Silver Mist Country Inn stands where the telegraph office once did, with a second storey and a garden where the bare veld used to be.

Same ground, a whole new life. Which is Kaapsehoop in a nutshell: nothing quite dies here, it just rises again as something new.

Kaapsehoop is not just a destination. It is something to be protected.

Among the First Hotels of Gold Rush Kaapsehoop

When gold was discovered on the De Kaap goldfields, thousands of prospectors, traders, transport riders, officials and fortune seekers converged on the mountain.

They all needed somewhere to sleep, eat, meet and exchange news.

The Pilgrim's Rest Hotel was among the earliest hospitality establishments to serve the rapidly growing settlement at Kaapsche Hoop. Like other hotels of the era, it began modestly, evolving from tents and temporary structures into a more permanent presence on the mountain.

Archival records reveal that hotels and canteens required licences to operate, creating a fascinating paper trail that allows us to reconstruct the businesses, proprietors and personalities who shaped life during the gold rush years.

One contemporary visitor wrote in 1888:

"Pilgrim's Rest Tent, on the summit of Duivel's Kantoor, was the first spot where I encountered anything of a sanitary nature, and where I got myself slightly tidy."

Small details like these offer a glimpse into everyday life on a remote frontier where comfort was often in short supply.

This is just one of many hotels, boarding houses and canteens that once served the bustling goldfields of Kaapsche Hoop.

These two photographs tell a story that spans generations.

A young man leaves the United States to return to Africa, where he volunteers and trains in the demanding field of anti-poaching. The training requires discipline, endurance, resilience, and a deep respect for the natural world.

Yet amidst that journey, he also took time to volunteer in the Kaapsehoop Historical Cemetery, helping to clean and preserve the graves and stories of those who came before us.

For him, this was more than community service. Through his maternal line, he is a direct descendant of Kaapsehoop pioneer Charles Rupert Lambourn, one of the early residents who helped shape the history of the mountain. In preserving the cemetery, he was also reconnecting with a place that forms part of his own family's story.

In a world where we often hear that younger generations are disconnected from history, heritage, and place, moments like these remind us that the connection is still there. Sometimes it simply needs to be rediscovered.

Whether protecting wildlife, preserving heritage, or caring for the stories of those who came before us, stewardship is about understanding that we are part of something larger than ourselves.
