Elephants really do make simply walking through the bush worth stopping for.

A large herd moving calmly, keeping their own pace, following their own route, completely unconcerned with anything else.

Very little needs to happen for a sighting like this to be worth watching.

World Rhino Day feels particularly close to home here.

KwaZulu-Natal has played an important role in South Africa’s rhino conservation story for decades, and Manyoni exists in part because of it.

In 2004, 17 landowners removed their internal fences to create one connected 23,000-hectare reserve. A major reason was to create enough secure habitat for black rhino. The following year, Manyoni became the second release site for the WWF and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, when a founder population of black rhino was moved here from protected areas elsewhere in KwaZulu-Natal.

Today, both black and white rhino live on the reserve, supported by ongoing monitoring, security and the wider conservation partnerships working across the province.

So when we stop for a rhino on a game drive, we are looking at far more than an extraordinary animal. We are looking at the result of protected space, collaboration and years of conservation work.

That feels worth celebrating today.

A whole ecosystem can exist on the back of something much bigger.

Red-billed oxpeckers spend much of their day hitching rides on rhino, buffalo, giraffe and other large mammals, working their way over the skin in search of ticks and other parasites.

The relationship is more complicated than a simple cleaning service. Oxpeckers are also attracted to blood and wounds, making them opportunists as much as helpful passengers.

Either way, once you start watching the birds on a sighting, the animal underneath them is only half the story.
