Winter feels different here, but the kind of different that makes you want to linger longer. ♥️

The ocean shifts a little in winter - deeper colour, more movement along the shore. And just beyond it, the Southern Right Whales start to return to the sheltered waters of the Overberg again. 🐋

They come in to calve and rest through winter, often staying close enough to Walker Bay that you can catch them from the dunes.

There’s a lot more happening here than what guests usually see.

Beyond the boats, hot tubs and slow weekends away, there’s a landscape being actively cared for every day.

Over the past 20 years, dedicated teams have worked to restore indigenous fynbos, remove invasive species and protect the biodiversity that makes this corner of the Overberg so special. Wildlife is monitored through camera traps, wetlands are carefully managed, and following the recent wildfires, Coot Club became a refuge for 60 beehives supporting pollinator recovery in the region.

Conservation here isn't one big project. It's thousands of small decisions that help protect and restore the natural systems around us.

This World Environment Day, we're grateful to the people doing that work behind the scenes and helping ensure this landscape continues to thrive for generations to come.

You can take it slow around the lagoon, head out on the sandy tracks, or cycle into Stanford Village for coffee and back again.

No rush to get anywhere quickly.

Today, on , we’re pausing to notice what’s already happening all around us. 🌱

Here at Coot Club, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes - and a team who knows this landscape inside out.

They don’t just look after the land, they live alongside it. Keeping things in balance, noticing the small changes, making sure it all continues to thrive in its own way.

It’s not always loud work, but it makes a very real difference.
And we’re quietly grateful for it. 💚

We share our space with a very small but very important neighbour, the Cape Honeybee. 🐝

Indigenous to the fynbos, always busy, and quietly keeping the whole ecosystem going in the background.

You’ll probably hear them before you notice them. And if you’re lucky, taste a bit of what they’ve been working on too. 🍯

The air cools. The days slow down a little. And somewhere just beyond the shoreline, the first movements begin to appear. 🐋

Southern Right Whales return to the Overberg every year, spending months along this stretch of coast to calve and rest in the sheltered waters. From the land, you’ll often only catch glimpses, a splash, a slow rise, something just breaking the surface before disappearing again.
