Despite the recent heavy rains, Green Fig Guesthouse on Main Road, Suurbraak remains completely unaffected by flooded bridges. The roads leading directly to us are clear, safe, and ready for your journey.

We wish our neighbours well. The sun is out, so we'll see you soon again 🔆🏡💛

Please note that all the bridges to Oorkant are currently flooded with nobody being able to go in or out.

Did you know that Suurbraak was originally named Xairu by the indigenous Attaqua Khoi people, which means "beautiful place of paradise"?

Before European settlers arrived, the valley at the foot of the Tradouw Pass was known simply as Xairu. The name Suurbraak (originally spelled Zuurbraak in early 18th- and 19th-century documents) comes from the Dutch words for sour (zuur) and bracken ferns (braak), noting the local vegetation observed by early farmers.

Established as a peaceful mission station way back in 1812, our historic village still holds onto that slow, soul-restoring magic.

Sometimes, when walking one's dogs along the river, one has to turn around on a narrow path to allow the free reign horse his way. No casualties to report, only a little bit of chaos. 🔆😊
