Cosy self-catering, pet friendly cottages in the Highlands. Open all year round. The holiday cottages are all unique, stand alone and have stunning views.

A number have loch views and all have mountainous vistas. Each of the 10 properties are open throughout the whole year with weekly stays and short breaks offered, pets are also welcome. The estate is home to a diverse range of wildlife from red deer, pine martins, otters, eagles, seals and much more. Guests often have sightings of these species from the comfort of their holiday cottage or when out exploring the estate on the series of purpose built footpaths.

🐮🌿 A little cow TLC before heading back out onto the hill.

Our cattle have been in getting ready for their next stint out on the hill.

💊 Worm counts, dosing and mineral boluses, we’d previously taken dung samples for worm egg counts to assess parasite burdens and inform what we needed to dose for. The cattle have also been given mineral boluses to provide essential trace elements while they’re out grazing.

📍 Collars, getting the batteries changed in their grazing collars, so we can manage where they graze, including targeting areas of bracken.

A little bit of behind the scenes preparation to keep our hairy helpers healthy and ready to get back out doing what they do best! 🐂💚

🦌 Wildlife at Kingairloch - The Red Deer Rut 🦌

Autumn brings one of the most fascinating times of year for our red deer, as the rut takes place across the hills.

During the rut, stags compete for the attention of hinds, using their deep roars to challenge rivals and establish dominance. If you’re out walking in the glens at this time of year, you may hear the sound carrying across the hills, particularly in the early mornings and evenings. It’s an incredible sound and a real sign that autumn has arrived.

You may also see stags displaying their strength, walking with their heads held high or facing off against other males. While these encounters can look dramatic, they are a natural part of the breeding season, with the strongest and most dominant stags competing for access to the hinds.

The rut is also an important time in the estate calendar, with stag stalking forming part of our ongoing deer management. This helps maintain a healthy balance between the deer population and the habitats they depend on.

For us, it’s another reminder of how closely the seasons shape life on the estate, and there’s something special about hearing the stags roar across the hills as the landscape changes around us.

🌱🐂 Our Highland cattle are very much at home in the autumn weather. Their long, shaggy coats are perfectly suited to the colder and wetter conditions as we head towards winter, helping them stay warm and protected from the elements.

But they are more than just a familiar and much-loved sight around the estate. Alongside the Angus-Dexter cross cattle, they play an important part in how we manage and improve the land at Kingairloch.

One of our long-term aims is to combine sustainable meat production with environmental improvement across our rough ground and hill habitats. Using geo-collars, we can carry out targeted grazing, moving cattle into areas where their grazing can have the greatest benefit.

Where bracken has become dominant, the cattle help by grazing, trampling and naturally fertilising the ground. Over time, this can help break down dense bracken cover and encourage the return of healthier grassland and a wider range of plants.

It is a gradual process, but having the right animals in the right places can make a real difference to the way the land is managed.

The spring-born calves will soon be weaned from the herd, giving the cows time to recover and build condition before we look ahead to spring calving in 2027.

It is all part of looking after the cattle while also working towards a healthier, more diverse and productive landscape here at Kingairloch. 🐂🌱

The Highlands are often described as an escape, but what exactly are we escaping from?

Sometimes life is simply busy. An escape to the Highlands might mean a week tucked away in a holiday cottage, surrounded by mountains, lochs and fresh air. Other times, it might just be 15 seconds of beautiful Highland scenery on your screen — a little reminder to stop for a moment and appreciate just how beautiful the world around us can be.
