Ever wondered how you celebrate a cow?

We wanted to share some of the photos and highlights from our Luing Cow Open Day and celebration of 60 years of the Luing Cattle breed; hosted at the end of August on our family farm on the Isle of Luing.

It was great to welcome old friends and welcome new ones to the farm to share our passion for the Luing breed. Our Luing cows were on their best behaviour and we led a number of farm tours and talks throughout the day - including tractor pick ups from the ferry 🤣

Refreshments for all were much enjoyed - thank you to all who helped.

A big shout out and heartfelt thank you to Farm Manager Jo, and the rest of the team Bob, Chris, Ellie and everyone who worked very hard in the lead up to, during and after the day.

Little Saskia even popped in to say hello to the cows!

Thank you also to everyone who came to celebrate with us, the hardworking ferry team and Luing residents.

WildLuing is located in the grounds of our working family farm on Luing ♥️

All around the blooming Heather…

Late summer and early autumn is the perfect time to see the plentiful heather blooming in Scotland.

Known in Gaelic as Fraoch; the bright purple of the heather covers the Scottish hills and moors. Here on the Isle of Luing we tend to get it from late July to September.

If you ever happen to spot white heather it is rarer and thus often seen as a source of protection and a good luck charm.

4th September - we are celebrating and highlighting Scottish Venison Day!

Scottish Venison Day is to promote Venison as a traditional Scottish food, a naturally nutritious meat and a sustainable uniquely Scottish product.

Scottish Venison Day promotes sustainable deer management to maintain biodiversity, protecting young trees in Scotland’s forests; whilst producing local meat.

We use local Venison from Luing and Scarba for in house catering for groups at WildLuing, but also supply it locally. We get Roe deer on Luing with the occasional Red deer and Scarba provides us with Venison from Red and Fallow deer.

September is here 🍂

Summer at WildLuing means sunny days near the water, BBQs on the fire pits and picnics. Now, as the seasons change, it is all about the cosy nights in the suites, autumnal hikes, breathtaking skies and blooming Heather.

What are you looking forward to most in September?

Anyone for a fish supper?

This Otter was spotted on the Luing ferry slip wrestling a huge eel!

Watch to the end to witness some serious water acrobatics 🌊

Looking for day trip ideas from WildLuing?

One of the easiest and closest is to pop over to Easdale island - another of the slate islands. From neighbouring Seil it is less than a 5 minute passenger ferry crossing to reach the island.

No cars or roads means it is a great place to wander, hike and explore!

Top things to do on the island:
🥾 Walk around the island back to the ferry to see the old quarries (now flooded) and views out to sea.
🦐 Stop in at The Puffer to see Rachel, Jhennia and their team for delicious homemade dishes including seafood, cakes and more! Be sure to check their socials for live music nights and bands.
🧼 Head to Bethan’s shop Siabann Eisdeal for handmade soaps, washes and other gifts.
📚 Dive into the islands history at Easdale museum.
🏊‍♀️ Dip into some of the old quarries for a swim in the turquoise clear waters (please do so at own risk and responsibility).
⛰ Climb to the top of the hill to reach the trig point and on a clear day see neighbouring islands.
🎻 Check out Easdale Hall for live music nights, theatre and pop up socials.
🌊 Visit on the day of the World Stone Skimming Championships and either participate or be part of the crowd watching.

Save for your next future visit to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
