Set in the heart of Ashbury, the Rose & Crown is ideally placed for those looking to explore one of Britain’s most historic walking routes: The Ridgeway.

Often described as “Britain’s oldest road,” The Ridgeway follows a high chalk ridge for 87 miles (139 km), running from the World Heritage Site of Avebury through the countryside to Ivinghoe Beacon, northwest of London. The route follows a path that has been used for thousands of years by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers. Today, it remains a much-loved route for walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders.

The Rose & Crown is located within Section 2 of The Ridgeway, between Ogbourne St George and Wayland’s Smithy, close to the beginning of the trail. We are stop number 14 within this section, making Ashbury and the Rose & Crown a natural place to pause, refresh and enjoy some well-earned hospitality along the way.

You don’t have to commit to walking the entire Ridgeway to enjoy this beautiful landscape. The trail is divided into seven sections and is traditionally walked over six or seven days, but there are also plenty of shorter and circular routes for those who simply want to experience a taste of the trail.
One of these routes is the Ashbury Circular, which brings the Rose & Crown right into the experience.

The main Ashbury Circular is approximately 7¾ miles (12½ km), with a shortcut reducing the distance to around 6 miles (9½ km). The routes take in a mixture of tracks, field paths, pasture, arable farmland, village lanes and footpaths, offering a wonderful way to experience the character of the North Wessex Downs and the historic landscape surrounding Ashbury.

Whether you’re tackling a section of The Ridgeway, enjoying one of the Ashbury Circular walks, or simply exploring the local countryside, the Rose & Crown makes a welcoming place to begin or end your day.

👨‍🍳❤️ Happy Chef Appreciation Day from PS91 Hospitality!

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible chefs who bring passion, creativity and dedication to our kitchens across all four of our venues: The Rose & Crown in Ashbury, The Bull Hotel in Fairford, The Eliot Arms in South Cerney, and The Coach & Horses in Chiselhampton.

For us, chef appreciation is about more than great food. It’s about the people, the passion and the stories behind every plate; and at PS91 Hospitality, that connection runs especially deep.

Our director, Adrian, whose tenure brings his own experience, knowledge and passion for the kitchen into everything we do. Having spent his career understanding the hard work, teamwork and dedication that go into every service, he knows first-hand just how much our kitchen teams give every day.

And that passion has a special family connection, too. ❤️ Adrian’s daughter, Katie, is an integral part of the kitchen team at The Eliot Arms in South Cerney. It’s a lovely reminder that a love of food, the buzz of a busy kitchen and the pride in creating something special can be shared across generations.

Today, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every chef and kitchen team member across our venues. From the preparation before service to the final plate leaving the pass, your skill, resilience and hard work make a real difference to our guests and to our business.
