Fancy a trip back to the Ice Age?

No, we're not suggesting you need to find a time machine!

Just a visit to Creswell Crags, a fascinating place within easy reach of Cedar Holme.

This dramatic limestone gorge is home to caves that were used by people and animals thousands of years ago. Archaeologists have discovered ancient tools, animal remains and even some of the oldest known Ice Age cave art in Britain.

You can explore the beautiful gorge, enjoy a walk around the lake and, if you book ahead, join a guided cave tour to discover more about the people who lived here during the Ice Age.

It's a brilliant day out for anyone who loves history, archaeology or just somewhere a little different to explore.

And here's a useful tip: during November, the visitor centre and facilities are open at weekends only, so check before travelling.

Who knew there was so much history hiding just down the road?

Hello November!

Well, autumn is definitely making itself at home now.

The mornings are getting colder, the evenings are drawing in and we're starting to appreciate those little things that make this time of year lovely.

A warm, cosy cottage.

A proper country walk with crunchy leaves underfoot.

A hot drink when you get back.

And absolutely no guilt about spending the afternoon curled up on the sofa.

November might not have the sunshine and long evenings of summer, but it has its own kind of magic.

And here at Cedar Holme, we're rather looking forward to it.

Who's a fan of a cosy autumn break?

Very important Halloween question…

What's your choice?
A) Dress up and embrace the spooky season 👻
B) Eat an unreasonable amount of Halloween chocolate 🍫
C) Watch scary films until you regret it 🎬
D) Go exploring somewhere suitably spooky 🏰
E) All of the above because you're on holiday and calories don't count.
We're going with E.
Obviously. 😂

Although we're not entirely sure the local wildlife would appreciate a witch flying over the farm at midnight…

And we definitely can't promise that the horses won't judge your costume.
They already have opinions about most things. 🐴

Whatever you're doing this Halloween, we hope it's a good one!

Sometimes, you don't need to go anywhere.
One of our favourite things about Cedar Holme is the bit that doesn't require any planning at all…

Sitting outside and enjoying the view.
Grab a cuppa. ☕
Find a comfy seat.
Put your feet up.
And just watch the world go by.

The fields stretch out in front of you, with the countryside beyond and views towards Chesterfield and the famous Crooked Spire.
You might see the horses doing absolutely nothing.
A bird flying overhead.
The occasional wildlife visitor passing through.
Or absolutely bu**er all.

And that's okay too. 😂
Because when you're on holiday, you're allowed to sit down without feeling guilty about it.

No jobs to do.
No emails to answer.
No washing to put away.

Just fresh air, a lovely view and a bit of peace and quiet.
Sometimes the best part of a holiday is simply having nowhere else you need to be.

Why visit the Peak District in Autumn?
Let us give you a few reasons…

🍁 Autumn colours everywhere you look.
🥾 Cooler temperatures for walking.
🐕 Perfect weather for dogs who don't fancy melting on a summer walk.
🏡 Cosy evenings back at Cedar Holme.
🍽️ Country pubs serving hearty food.
🏰 Historic houses and castles without the height of summer crowds.
🌅 Gorgeous autumn sunsets.
🦌 And the chance of spotting some of the wildlife that calls the countryside home.

Plus, there's something about being wrapped up in a coat, walking through crunchy leaves and then coming back to a warm, cosy cottage that just feels right.

Autumn might not have the guaranteed sunshine of summer…

But it has cosiness by the bucketload.
And we're here for it.

Thinking about bringing your bike on holiday?

If you're staying at Cedar Holme and fancy exploring a bit more of Derbyshire on two wheels, the Monsal Trail is definitely worth putting on your list.

The former railway line runs through the beautiful Peak District, following the old Midland Railway route through the Wye Valley.

And because it's mostly traffic-free, it's a brilliant way to enjoy the scenery without constantly worrying about cars whizzing past you.
You'll pass through tunnels, over old railway bridges and alongside some seriously gorgeous countryside.

And don't worry if you don't fancy loading the bikes into the car…
You can hire bikes too! 🚲

So whether you're a proper cycling enthusiast who thinks a holiday isn't complete without a few miles under your belt, or you're more of a leisurely pedal-and-stop-for-cake kind of cyclist…

The Monsal Trail has you covered. 😂
And let's be honest, the second type sounds considerably more like our sort of cycling.

Pedal. Explore. Stop for cake. Repeat. 🍰

You never quite know who's going to turn up at Cedar Holme.
One of the things we love about living here is that the farm is never completely predictable.

You might spot deer in the fields.
A fox sneaking across the grass.
A pheasant strutting around like he owns the place.
Geese flying overhead.

Or, if you're really lucky, one of our nocturnal visitors wandering around after dark. 🦡

There's something rather special about sitting quietly with a cuppa and watching what's happening outside.

No safari ticket required.
No fancy binoculars.
Just a bit of patience…
And maybe a little luck.

Although we can't promise the wildlife will perform on cue.
They've clearly not read the script. 😂

Tonight's plans?

Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
And isn't that sometimes the whole point of going away?

No work emails.
No washing machine.
No jobs you've been putting off for six months.
No thinking about what you're cooking tomorrow.

Just…
A nice meal.
A comfy sofa.
A warm cottage.
Maybe a glass of something.
Maybe a film.
Maybe a book.
And the smug satisfaction of knowing that tomorrow you can get up and do it all again. 😂

Cedar Holme isn't just somewhere to sleep after you've spent all day rushing around the Peak District.

It's somewhere you can actually switch off.
And sometimes that's the best bit of the holiday.

The Peak District weather forecast…

8am: Gorgeous blue skies.
10am: Still lovely.
11.30am: Ooh, that's a cloud.
12pm: Is that rain?
12.03pm: YES. IT'S RAIN.
12.17pm: Why is the sun out again?
12.19pm: Horizontal rain.
12.45pm: Beautiful rainbow. 🌈
1pm: Blue skies.
And repeat.
😂

If you're coming to stay at Cedar Holme, our advice is simple:
Don't try to outsmart Derbyshire weather.
Just bring a waterproof.
And enjoy whatever it throws at you.

Because somehow, even when the weather is doing its absolute best to confuse everyone, the countryside still looks bloody gorgeous.

Our favourite kind of walking route…

The one that ends at a pub.
Luckily, Cedar Holme is in a pretty handy spot for exactly that.

The Barley Mow is around a 10-minute walk away, so you can head out from the cottage, stretch your legs and enjoy a drink or something to eat without needing to get back in the car.

And if you fancy going a little further, Smithy Pond is around a 15-minute walk and the Hunloke Arms is around 25 minutes.

Although we'd probably recommend checking your route before setting off…
Because “it's only a short walk” sounds very different when you're walking back uphill after a couple of drinks. 😂

October.
Walking boots.
Country pubs.
Good food.
Sounds like a plan to us.
