Piazza della Repubblica may look as though it was designed for cafés, leisurely walks and photographs. In fact, it is the result of one of the most radical transformations in Florence’s history.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Old Market, the Jewish ghetto, medieval towers, churches, workshops and homes were demolished to create the square we see today. An entire neighbourhood disappeared during the so-called “Risanamento” of the city centre.
The great arch still bears a celebratory inscription stating that the ancient city centre had been restored to new life after centuries of decay. Words that sound very different today, knowing how much of old was lost.
