Al Porto di Lucca is a recently renovated large house with a garden, which can be dated to back to 1700. It is owned by a family from Lucca, whose origins date back to 1500. It is a bed and breakfast with 4 guest rooms, each with a private bathroom, located less than 300 meters from the walls and the historic center of Lucca, which then can be reached on foot or by bike via an underpass. The railway station is just 200 meters away, and by train there is easy access to Pisa with its international airport, and to the city of Florence. In addition to the gardens, the great hall and the veranda are at guests' disposal for breakfast.

The Masterpiece That Made a Love Eternal

In the transept of the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca stands the funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto, the second wife of Paolo Guinigi, Lord of Lucca, who died at a very young age in 1405.

It was Paolo Guinigi himself who commissioned the work from the Sienese sculptor Jacopo della Quercia, one of the greatest artists of the early Italian Renaissance.

The result is still considered one of the absolute masterpieces of funerary sculpture. Ilaria is depicted as if peacefully asleep, with a small dog at her feet symbolising marital fidelity, resting on a sarcophagus decorated with cherubs and garlands.

One detail never fails to captivate visitors: the serenity of her face and the natural folds of her gown, carved in marble with such extraordinary delicacy that the stone almost seems to turn into real fabric.
