At 83, he always sits in the middle and is most often flanked by a guide on either side. He respects his guides and all our guides. He’s seen many come and go. He listens to their stories, to their differing fishing processes, and then, always in polite, gentle, quiet words, he almost says, “I have been there and done that,” which he has at 83!
He comes to the bottom of the world and Poronui. His legs may be failing in the strong winds on Mystery Creek, but not his mind, determination, or fiercely competitive character.
He loves the Poronui trout streams. He’s seen them all and knows them well. So, whenever you stop to ask, he’ll tell you a tale of where he’s been and when he was there last.
And it’s always at this time of year that we welcome Fred’s return and look forward to these days. His return starts the very serious part of our season, and he truly kicks it off!
Fred, at 83, you’re a legend to me and always will be at Poronui.
