At Huka Lodge, the river sets the pace. The Lodge Suite is designed around that gently flowing rhythm, with floor-to-ceiling French doors opening the room to established gardens, birdsong and the quiet, constant presence of the Waikato beyond.

A remarkable place with Beckons.

Al fresco breakfast on the terrace includes eggs prepared precisely to your liking, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and greens picked fresh from the garden. Juice squeezed that morning, tea by the pot, and the Waikato River flowing beside you the whole time.

Huka Lodge has been named No.82 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 extended 51-100 list for the second consecutive year.

Set amongst 17 acres of park-like gardens on the banks of the Waikato River, Huka Lodge has welcomed guests since 1924. What began as a fishers’ camp has grown into one of the world’s most storied luxury retreats, known for its warmth, exceptional dining, and real sense of place.

“For more than a century, Huka Lodge has offered guests a remarkable connection to the natural beauty of Taupō, delivered with the warmth, generosity and personal hospitality for which it is known,” says Beckons CEO, Michael Crawford.

Showcasing the best architecture and design from Australia, New Zealand and the United States, the Local Project anthology takes a look at Christian Anderson Architects’ work at the recently reimagined, century-young Huka Lodge.

The measure of success of the extensive work across architecturural design, the interiors and the grounds is that returning guests cannot pick where the old lodge ends and the new features begin. christian anderson architects carried the original lines through the new buid, Virginia Fisher Design layered warmth and heritage into the interiors, and Suzanne Turley Landscapes connected the new buildings to the extensive, parklike grounds as though they had always been there.

A quieter way to start to the day. Steam rises from your morning coffee and from the Waikato River in the near distance. Pause to take in the particular kind of quiet that surrounds you and sets the tone here at Huka Lodge.

The Waikato River runs the same cold blue all year. The first sign of spring on the horizon here is the change of light, staying out a little longer each evening.

The best mornings ask nothing of you. Beyond the balcony and the lush green lawns the Waikato River keeps its own schedule, running and churning in that particular emerald blue toward the thundering Huka Falls a short way downstream. A peaceful and mesmerising rolling view.

Introducing Tomorrow Beckons - our global regenerative travel program, uniting Beckons lodges across Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Canada in one shared mission: to protect and regenerate the landscapes, wildlife and communities that make each destination extraordinary.

Tomorrow Beckons is hyper-local by design, with each lodge partnering with a dedicated community or environmental organization in its region, allowing guests to directly support and sustain local and meaningful initiatives.

Healthy landscapes begin with local action. Together with Greening Taupō, we’re helping restore native ecosystems through tree planting, w**d removal and community-led conservation days, creating ecological corridors where wildlife can thrive for future generations

To celebrate the launch, our inaugural fundraising auction is now live. Bid on a three-night stay at any of our nine lodges, each paired with a bonus once-in-a-lifetime experience. Every dollar raised will go directly to our regional partners. Follow the link in bio to place your bid before the auction closes on Thursday 6 August at 11pm AEST.

The table has been set at Huka Lodge just as it has been for the better part of a century. Linen pressed, silverware placed, candles waiting for the evening's first guests. The menu changes with the season and Taupō's larder of fresh ingredients. The sense of occasion never does.

Turn the sound on for this one. The emerald blue Waikato River has been rushing past this terrace every evening for the better part of a century, and it still insists on being heard, especially when the sky turns pink at sunset and everything else falls quiet.

Some lodges have a view. Huka Lodge has a soundtrack.

A remarkable place within Beckons.
