There's a new book on our shelves at Pinecrest, and it came with a story we couldn't resist sharing.
The Button Box, written by Janet Sever Hull and illustrated by Vicki Killion Guess, begins with a real button box handed down through the family — and one button in particular. The story goes that a great-aunt sewed for Mrs. Lincoln, back before Mr. Lincoln became president. Years later, magnifying glass in hand, Janet and her mother pored over a library book about the Lincoln family to see if any of their buttons matched the ones on Mrs. Lincoln's clothing. One did. It's been called the Lincoln Button ever since.
We had the joy of meeting Janet (that's me with her, book in hand), and now The Button Box has found a home on our library shelf — right alongside the cookbooks and Carolina stories our guests love to thumb through on a slow morning.
Next time you're with us, pull it down and read the whole story for yourself.
