Billed as America’s largest privately owned home, the Biltmore Estate was built for railroad tycoon George Vanderbilt. The first stone for the Gilded Age mansion was laid on this day in 1891. The French Renaissance chateau, located in Asheville, North Carolina, features 250 rooms and grounds that stretch across 8,000 acres.
