Thank you to the Winthrop Book Depot & Café for hosting an author book signing for my debut novel, The Unraveling of Michael Galler. It’s a psychological family drama rooted in the oceanside suburbs of Boston.

What a great meeting place for coffee and books in the heart of Winthrop Center!

According to Boston Today, it “…explores timely themes of health anxiety and personal identity.”

And filmmaker Gavin O’Connor, whose movie Miracle was inspired by one of Winthrop’s storied sons, described it as …”a physical and emotional battleground in which the underlying tension could escalate at any moment…”.

As it was ahead of my hometown high school reunion later that evening, it was great to see many old friends who came in to buy the book and others who came in with the books they already owned for me to sign.

And, of course, I got to meet many of the new locals who make Winthrop what it is today.

The highlight of the event, to me, was when the wife of my 92-year-old father’s best friend came in with her son. I’ve known her since I was a wee toddler. (Oh, and that fresh cup of coffee and muffin I had to start the event was pretty good, too.)

They may still have a few copies on the shelves if you find yourself in the neighborhood, or you can go to my website for ordering options and updates related to my publishing journey at stevenmrubin.com.

I’m looking forward to returning to Winthrop this Saturday August 29 for our 65th birthday party reunion. (So many years!)

Check out the article in the Transcript announcing my debut book signing on Saturday morning August 29 at the Winthrop Book Depot and Café from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. And I thank them in advance for hosting! I hope to see you there and at the reunion later that evening.

And if you are wondering if the book reflects my hometown roots, I’ll share the following excerpt with you:

“He watched the ocean itself, captivated by its presence. He studied the waves as they rolled in from the distant horizon, only to be dismantled by the offshore breakers. Just as one wave collapsed onto the rocky forearm, another appeared, seemingly destined to reach the shore and decimate it. Spying the entire coastline, he saw the white foam of cresting waves searching out unprotected areas of the shore. Having spent eons shifting sandbars, moving rocks, and churning up its own floor, the ocean waited patiently for the right combination of high tides, atmospheric pressure, and warm air fronts to create a sea so violent that it could hurdle the breakwater, roll over the jetties, punch the sea wall, and throw itself and all of its refuse into the face of any building that dared to stand in its way. For now, it lay dormant. However, one thing was evident: The ocean would go where it wanted to go, when it wanted to go there.”

I’ll be returning to my beloved home town, Winthrop, MA, this coming Saturday August 29, 2026 to sign books at Winthrop Book Depot & Café from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm ahead of the Class of 1979 65th Birthday Party Reunion later that evening.

I’ve recently published my debut novel, The Unraveling of Michael Galler, a family drama with a psychological edge set on Boston’s North Shore.

Filmmaker Gavin O’Connor (Miracle, The Accountant, Warrior, and The Way Back) has praised the book for having “created a physical and emotional battleground in which the underlying tension could escalate at any moment.”

Having attended the University of Pennsylvania and since settling in Connecticut, the book has received national recognition, including several book lists:

*The Philadelphia Inquirer: Five books by authors with ties to Philadelphia to take to the shore
*CTInsider: New books by Connecticut authors to add to your summer reading list
*SheReads Magazine: Family dramas that will tug at your heart strings
*Boston Today says, “. . . it explores timely themes of health anxiety and personal identity . . .”
*Midwest Book Review calls it, “Original, exceptional, deftly crafted, and an inherently reader engaging read from start to finish.”
*The Kansas City Star sports columnist and Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist Vahe Gregorian describes the writing as “. . . thought-provoking and visceral eloquence . . .”
*The Culture Buzz, Iowa's gateway to arts and literature says, ". . . a fantastic book . . . so many wonderful elements . . ."

Be sure to stop in and pick up a copy and to relive some old memories with me, or make some new ones.

“This book is going to run in the top books for me for 2026. I don’t know if anybody can knock me out of my seat better than this book.” – Teresa Bruck

I had a great, in-depth conversation with Teresa Bruck and Scott Lovelace on their podcast, One Final Twist.

We talked at great length about the development of the three main characters of my debut novel, The Unraveling of Michael Galler:

- Michael: A teenager transitioning from high school to college with an obsessive fear of cancer
- Julie: Michael’s girlfriend and initiator of an emotional and complex relationship
- Tremont: Raised in a challenging domestic situation, seemingly worlds away from Michael

I also responded to probing questions, like:
- What was the original nugget for this idea?
- Emotionally speaking, how hard was it to write both Michael and Tremont because they are both fighting different, but hard battles?
- Was there ever a place writing the story where it became unexpectedly personal?
- Was loneliness your intended outcome; did you think readers would come away with that, too?
- Tell us about your process of writing in the mindset of a teenager/young adult? How did you do that?
- When you set out to do this book was it your intent from the beginning to build the psychological tension?

Thank you to Barnes & Noble in Wareham, MA for hosting my author book signing. I met so many interesting people who shared their stories with me and who were intrigued by the premise of The Unraveling of Michael Galler.

“In Michael’s mind, cancer ceases to be a medical diagnosis. It becomes any threat that forms unseen, any force that grows without permission, any bad thing waiting inside the body or the family or the future. This is the novel’s unsettling invention.”
—Award-winning podcaster and author Terry Shepherd

We sold 75% of stock and the remaining signed copies are still available in the store. Or, you can order directly from Barnes & Noble's website where you can read a detailed description of the book, see editorial reviews, and even read a sample.

Give it a listen!

I recently had the opportunity to speak with award-winning broadcaster and author Terry Shepherd. I joined him on his "In Conversation" podcast series, where he interviews leading and emerging authors, diving deep into the craft of writing, character development, and the human stories behind the pages.

Terry is quite a thought-provoking interviewer. Enjoy 25 minutes during your commute and follow along as I respond to challenging questions about my debut novel, The Unraveling of Michael Galler, such as:

- Why did you write the book?
- Where do you think the difference between healthy self-discipline and obsession began for Michael in the book?
- What did you want his relationship with Julie to reveal about Michael?
- What was the most emotionally difficult scene for you to write?
- How do you balance sympathy for Michael with the darker turns his fear and obsession begin to take?
