Driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway a few weeks back and into Big Witch Tunnel. What a curious name and now perhaps very seasonally appropriate…🧙

Big Witch Tunnel on the Blue Ridge Parkway is named after Big Witch, a 19th-century Cherokee medicine man and the last traditional Cherokee eagle hunter/killer who collected sacred eagle feathers for tribal ceremonies.

📍Location: Milepost 461.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, near the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians homeland.
📍Significance: The name honors Cherokee history and the local heritage of the region, which borders the Qualla Boundary reservation.

🍁🍄‍🟫While the fall colors definitely steal the show this time of year, don’t sleep on the mushrooms and other low lying growths! This Hemlock Varnish Shelf caught our eye the other day. How is it beautiful and ugly at the same time?

🍄The Hemlock Varnish Shelf might not show up on your dinner plate anytime soon, it does supposedly offer medicinal benefits.

🍄People commonly dry out the mushroom, slice or grind it into a powder, and process it into the following forms:
1. Decoction Tea: Slices are simmered in boiling hot water for 1 to 2 hours. This process breaks down the tough chitin cells and successfully extracts the water-soluble polysaccharides, yielding a very bitter, earthy drink.
2. Dual-Extraction Tinctures: Because triterpenoids are not water-soluble, foragers often perform a dual-extraction method using high-proof alcohol first, followed by a hot water steep to pull out all available active compounds.
3. Immunity Broths: Dried pieces can be dropped into long-simmering vegetable or bone broths to infuse wellness properties before discarding the woody solids.

🚨WARNING: Never pick or eat wild mushrooms because poisonous species are easily mistaken for edible varieties, and cooking, freezing, or drying will not destroy their deadly toxins

🚨WARNING: Always be aware and concerned of side effects, interactions with other medications and mold risks.

Christmas in the mountains…

🕯️🎄 AS NIGHT FALLS OVER WAYNESVILLE, LUMINARIES, MUSIC AND OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS CHARM WILL FILL MAIN STREET FOR ONE SPECIAL DECEMBER NIGHT!

Christmas in the Smoky Mountains has a way of feeling a little more nostalgic when the celebration happens right along a small-town Main Street.

On Saturday, December 12, 2026, A Smoky Mountain Christmas Celebration returns to Downtown Waynesville, North Carolina, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The annual celebration transforms downtown into a glowing holiday scene filled with luminaries, music and old-fashioned Christmas atmosphere.

Past celebrations have added even more to the evening, including Santa and his elves, an Elf Trail, craft stations, s’mores and hot cocoa, food vendors and horse-drawn carriage rides along streets illuminated by festive luminaries. Downtown shops also give visitors a chance to finish a little Christmas shopping while they are there.

And the setting is part of the experience. Waynesville’s historic downtown sits surrounded by the mountains of Western North Carolina, with locally owned shops, restaurants and red-brick sidewalks lining Main Street.

📅 Saturday, December 12, 2026
⏰ 6:00–9:00 PM
📍 Downtown Waynesville
16 S. Main St., Waynesville, NC 28786

Mark December 12 on the Christmas calendar. A mountain town glowing with luminaries and an evening spent strolling Main Street sounds like a beautiful way to make a Christmas memory.
