Today, we celebrate the incredible freshwater resources and maritime history that define our home. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary made history as the very first freshwater sanctuary in the National Marine Sanctuary System.

What started here in Alpena has paved the way for a growing network of protection across the Great Lakes, now including Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast and Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuaries. Together, these sites protect nationally significant shipwrecks and the unique natural resources of our Great Lakes.
