The expert from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, shared that “women 👩🏻🦰👩🏾🦱 and children 👧🏼👶🏽 are among those disproportionately affected by displacement worldwide” during a meeting with high school students 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏼♀️📝 from James Caldwell High School 🏫, 🇺🇸.
The students had completed AP (Advanced Placement) coursework in either European History or Human Geography. Earlier in their studies, they explored the role of the United Nations 🇺🇳 in addressing international crises.
Recently, together with their teachers, they toured alongside tour guides Nodoka ( 🇯🇵) and Silmara ( 🇧🇷) and saw firsthand where the diplomatic work of 193 Member States and 2 Observer States takes place.
They were especially interested in learning more about the challenges face and understanding the impact of displacement on host countries.
During their briefing, they discussed topics including:
🔹 was originally established to assist refugees following in , and its mandate later evolved to respond to displacement globally
🔹 At the end of 2025, approximately 117.8 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced
🔹 Most of the world’s refugees are hosted in low- and middle-income countries
