The expert from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, shared that “women 👩🏻‍🦰👩🏾‍🦱 and children 👧🏼👶🏽 are among those disproportionately affected by displacement worldwide” during a meeting with high school students 🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️📝 from James Caldwell High School 🏫, 🇺🇸.

The students had completed AP (Advanced Placement) coursework in either European History or Human Geography. Earlier in their studies, they explored the role of the United Nations 🇺🇳 in addressing international crises.

Recently, together with their teachers, they toured alongside tour guides Nodoka ( 🇯🇵) and Silmara ( 🇧🇷) and saw firsthand where the diplomatic work of 193 Member States and 2 Observer States takes place.

They were especially interested in learning more about the challenges face and understanding the impact of displacement on host countries.

During their briefing, they discussed topics including:

🔹 was originally established to assist refugees following in , and its mandate later evolved to respond to displacement globally
🔹 At the end of 2025, approximately 117.8 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced
🔹 Most of the world’s refugees are hosted in low- and middle-income countries

Mrs. Papadopoulos and Mr. Liers teach social studies and English as a New Language (ENL) at Bronx Legacy High School in 🗽🚕. They also lead the Global Young Leaders club for multilingual learners in grades 9–12.

After school, in their classroom, they welcomed a UN speaker specializing in climate issues.

The students 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏻‍♂️ asked:

1️⃣ “From all the work you have done so far, what are you most proud of?”

Without hesitation, the speaker responded:

“The ActNow campaign; it is for everyone and every day. There are no small actions when it comes to climate action, every action counts: buying second-hand items, including clothes 👖👚, using public transportation 🚃 and making more sustainable choices.”

2️⃣ “How does climate change affect health?”

The speaker explained:

“Extreme weather events are contributing to health impacts. Vulnerable populations such as older adults 👵🏼👴🏽, children 👶🏻👧🏼 and people living with chronic health conditions are disproportionately affected.”

The speaker emphasized:

“Climate change is already affecting communities around the world, but we can advance more sustainable choices and solutions for everyone. Youth participation is important!”

The conversation continued with practical actions that high school students can take individually and collectively.

Law students from Brigham Young University 🏫 in Provo, received instruction from internationally recognized experts in international law on topics including property rights and freedom of movement.

As part of their International Law and Global Leadership tour, the students visited United Nations Headquarters with Professor Jensen. During a briefing, they met with an expert to discuss the prevention of and the importance of relying on verified information when assessing international events. The discussion highlighted how information gathered through presences and operations in the field can contribute to a better understanding of situations on the ground, while noting that assessments may be more challenging where the Organization does not have a presence or mandate.

The future legal practitioners ⚖️ had many questions 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏻‍♂️, and the Q&A was highly engaging.

During a guided tour with Herta ( 🇦🇹), the group stood outside the Security Council Chamber while members were meeting under the agenda item “Maintenance of international peace and security,” including discussions related to maritime security.

The students later continued their study of peace 🕊️, tolerance, and inclusion in 🇲🇦.
