On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, we recognize their contributions to their communities and societies, as well as their vital role in preserving cultures, traditions and knowledge.

At United Nations Headquarters, visitors can see the Mola Tapestry displayed in the lobby of the General Assembly Building. Created by a group of 50 Indigenous Kuna women and presented to the United Nations 🇺🇳 by 🇵🇦 in 1993, it reflects their creativity, skills, resourcefulness and resilience.

A visit to the provides an opportunity to see this important gift and learn more about the Organization’s work to advance the rights of Indigenous peoples and women and girls around the world.

This summer, 81 students in grades 9–11 from four public schools visited United Nations Headquarters, where experts briefed them on their chosen Sustainable Development Goals, : No Poverty and : Good Health and Well-Being.

Their study of global affairs was part of a six-week experiential learning program that also included visiting Permanent Missions, reading a book and meeting its author, and collaborating on final projects addressing global issues connected to the .

The participants were multilingual students from immigrant backgrounds, with roots in 🇧🇩, 🇧🇹, Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, 🇨🇴, Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮, the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, 🇪🇨, El Salvador 🇸🇻, 🇭🇹, 🇭🇳, 🇮🇳, 🇯🇲, 🇲🇱, 🇲🇽, 🇳🇮, 🇵🇰, the 🇵🇭, 🇪🇸, 🇹🇬, the 🇺🇸, 🇻🇪, 🇻🇳, and 🇾🇪.

At the end-of-program ceremony, held at China Institute in America in Lower Manhattan, students from It Takes a Village Academy in shared:

“We chose SDG 5: Gender Equality because we think there is a problem at times: the normalization of violence against women. We wanted to learn about the SDGs, use them, and make a positive impact in our community.”

From the chambers where international decisions are made to the gardens where art and memorials tell stories of peace, the From Chambers to Garden Tour offers a closer look at United Nations Headquarters.

The 90-minute guided tour takes visitors through the Security Council Chamber and the General Assembly Hall, meetings permitting, before continuing outdoors to the North Lawn overlooking the East River.

Along the way, discover the history, architecture, art and symbolism of the , including sculptures, memorials and gifts from Member States that reflect the ideals of peace, solidarity and international cooperation.

As the tour includes indoor and outdoor areas, visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Visitors with mobility or accessibility needs may contact [email protected] in advance.

Discarded fabrics are carrying messages of peace at .

The Global Peace Flag brings together pieces of repurposed fabric on which people from around the world have shared messages of peace. For this exhibition, the canvases have been transformed into dresses, giving the messages a new form through fashion.

The project connects textile reuse with peace, sustainability, and the Sustainable Development Goals, while keeping discarded materials out of landfills.

On view at United Nations Headquarters until 9 September 2026.

The exhibition is organized by Runa Ray on behalf of Fashioning for Social Environmental Justice and endorsed by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health.

Can artificial intelligence help accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals ( ) and who gets to shape how it is used?

During a briefing at SUNIA, a UN speaker invited students to examine the opportunities and difficult questions surrounding , sustainable development and Africa’s future.

The need for new solutions is urgent. According to the United Nations’ 2025 SDG Report, only 35 per cent of targets with available data are on track or showing moderate progress, while 18 per cent have regressed.

The central message was clear: AI is a tool, not a goal. Its value should be measured by whether it improves people’s lives, protects human rights and helps close inequalities rather than deepen them. Responsible AI requires transparency, meaningful human oversight and the full participation of developing countries in shaping global rules.

For students, these questions are not about a distant future. Decisions being made today will influence their education, employment opportunities, rights and communities.

How does the United Nations turn global challenges into collective action, and where do young people fit in?

At SUNIA this week, a speaker from the Office of the President of the General Assembly engaged students in a wide-ranging conversation about the history and structure of the United Nations and its work across human rights, sustainable development, and peace and security.

The discussion explored the appointment of the Secretary-General, progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, and the UN’s role in helping countries address shared global challenges. Students also asked candid questions about the Organization’s strengths, limitations, and career opportunities.

Drawing on experience in journalism and international communications, the speaker shared insights from a career spanning several UN duty stations around the world.

Through exchanges like this, young people are not simply learning about international affairs, they are engaging directly with those working to address global challenges.
